Significant Scripture

Have you been reading your bible this past week? Would you be willing to share a significant passage you read and why it was a timely word for you from God? I would like to hear what you are reading and how it is impacting your life. Share your thoughts here.

4 The rabble who were among them had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, “Who will give us meat to eat? 5 “We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, 6 but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this manna.” (Numbers 11:4-6 NASB)

What stuck me the most in this passage was the word ‘free’. As the greedy rabbles (disorderly cowards) were grumbling the sons of Israel began weeping again. In their remembering Egypt they think of the fish they used to eat for ‘free’. The danger of a ‘free’ handout creates a dependency and a greedy craving for more of the same.

Share your significant scripture reading with me.

On December 1, 1950 Jim Eliot wrote these words in his journal: “Unwillingness to accept God’s “way of escape” from temptation frightens me what a rebel yet resides within.” (source)

The law of The Lord is perfect, converting the soul from Psalm 19:7. My word is ‘converting’ also translated ‘restoring and Renewing’ because the perfect law of God points me to the great need I have for a savior. The law changes my heart by declaring Gods righteousness, placing me in a right position before him and leading me in life.

I am studying through 2 Corinthians in light of what Paul writes at the end of 1 Corinthians: “For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries” (1 Cor. 16:9). Studying the various ways that the adversaries of the Gospel tried to work against Paul, yet worked for his good in making him more like Christ.

Matt, I like that Paul calls this a great and effective door and that there are many adversaries and then a few years later, he asks the saints to pray that God will open up a “door for the word, so that we may speak forth the mystery of Christ” (Colossians 4:2-4).
Thanks for sharing what you’re reading. We prayed for you guys tonight. May the Lord open a door for the word, so that you may speak forth the Gospel.

I noticed in Hebrews 5:8 the Bible states ” Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered.” This is not comfortable but gives me comfort knowing that I, too, must experience suffering of some sort. I must also allow my children and my students to suffer. Obedience and a drawing nigh to God is simply not possible without it. This is completely contrary to the world’s view of suffering.
I have also been reading through Psalm 119 for a couple of weeks now. I am inspired and awestruck in the many ways that the writer states (he) loves God’s commands, keeps them and even delights in them.

Thanks for sharing this Tina. These things that are contrary to the world’s view are perplexing at times aren’t they. I too want to love, keep and delight in the Lord’s commandments.

studying 1 Peter 1 and going through verses 13 -16 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy for I am holy.” this reminds me that It’s not just his saving grace, that I need to be obedient in everything I do and say and strive to be holy in my conduct at all times.I think we have put blinders on to the true Gospel and that we are saved and that’s it. and we have to do nothing else

No wonder the Lord tells us to count the cost of following him. There is no such thing as cheap grace. Thanks for sharing this.
