Get Your Gospel Shoes On

Monday, August 5, 2019, I will stand before the city council of Twin Falls at 5 p.m. to interpose for my neighbor who cannot speak for himself, for my neighbor who cannot appeal her case, who, unless God intervenes, will join the other 1,914 (and counting) babies murdered in the womb since 2008 in the city of Twin Falls, Idaho.

This is a call to all born-again, God-fearing, followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, as described by the Bible in the Magic Valley to join me at 203 Main Ave. East on Aug. 5 at 5 p.m. At this meeting I will request that the city of Twin Falls consider adopting code language to protect our neighbor in the womb who is at risk of being murdered. To intentionally stop life at any stage, especially when that murder is given a provision in the law, is a heinous act of the most horrific kind.

On Monday night at 5 p.m. I will request This new paragraph in Title 6 – Public Safety under general offenses. (Title 6 – Chapter 2 – Section 20)

Title 6 – Public Safety, Chapter 2 – General offenses,

(20) Abortion: Every person or organization using any means to intentionally terminate the clinically diagnosable, viable pregnancy of a woman with knowledge that the termination by those means will, with reasonable likelihood, cause the death of the unborn human being will be guilty of inflicting inhumane actions upon another causing death before the otherwise live birth.

(A) Definitions: For the purposes of this section the following words shall have the following meanings:

UNBORN HUMAN BEING: The offspring of human beings from the moment of conception until either live birth or natural death, including the human conceptus, zygote, morula, blastocyst, embryo and fetus, whether conceived and/or located inside or outside the body of a human female.

CONCEPTION: The fertilization of the ovum of a female by the sperm of a male.

ABORTION: The use or prescription of any instrument, medicine, drug, or any other substance or device to intentionally kill an unborn human being.

(B) Violations: Notwithstanding any other law, it shall be unlawful for a person to knowingly and intentionally perform, procure or attempt to perform an abortion.

(C) Construction: It is the intention of the city of Twin Falls that the provisions of this section be construed, enforced and interpreted in such a manner as to absolutely defend the right to life as enumerated in Section 1, Article I of the Idaho Constitution. The city of Twin Falls shall enforce this section regardless of any contrary or conflicting federal or state statutes, regulations, executive orders, or court decisions.

(D) Penalty: Violation of the provisions of this section is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) and/or six (6) months in jail, or both.

What can you do:

  • Pray.
  • Be informed.
  • Invite your Sunday School class to come.
  • Invite your pastor to come.
  • Attend the meeting (plan ahead, come early, be prepared to stand in the hall or on the street, but come.)
  • Invite someone to come with you.
  • Write city council members right now. Full list with contact information HERE.
  • Pray.

FAQ:

  • Can I attend the meeting even if I don’t live in the city of Twin Falls? Yes! It is not required that you be a citizen of Twin Falls to attend a meeting.
  • Where is the city council chambers? 203 Main Ave. East Twin Falls, Idaho
  • Will others be allowed to speak? This is not a public hearing. The city council could take action to not do anything or consider setting a date for a public hearing.
  • Why ask the city council to consider something you know they won’t adopt? I’ve never asked them to do this before, how do I know they won’t adopt this code language?
  • Why request an introduction of code when you could request a resolution? Where I like a smart resolution, resolutions don’t make any difference in action.
  • Why is the punishment only a misdemeanor with only a fine of $1,000 and/or six months in jail? This is the most strict punishment the city can lawfully give for city code.
  • If this becomes law won’t places like Planned Parenthood just move to Jerome, Buhl, Kimberly or some other nearby town? Yes, this is a possibility and why we will have to be ready to act soon on the jurisdiction of the county and all nearby counties.
  • Will places like Planned Parenthood sue the city of Twin Falls and cost the city a lot of money? Planned Parenthood could sue the city. But the code is written with the authority of the City of Twin Falls and the authority of the Idaho Constitution. The city of Twin Falls has the jurisdiction and responsibility to protect all citizens, neighbors, and visitors.
  • Why can’t you stay out of other peoples lives and let people do whatever they want to do? If I witnessed a crime, it would be a crime for me to do nothing or not attempt to interpose on the behalf of the weaker neighbor. My neighbor in the womb needs my help. I cannot, in good conscience, turn away or walk on the other side of the street.

Join me on Monday, August 5, 2019 at the city of Twin Falls city council chambers, 203 Main Ave. E., at 5:00 p.m.

Plan to come early. Remember parking in downtown is limited, you may find closer parking behind the city council chambers. Be sure to plan ahead. Ask to get off work early. Be prepared to stand in the hallway or on the street. It will be hot, bring water. Even it it means you stand in the hallway or on the street and hear nothing, your presence says this is something the citizens want the council to consider.

Special ATTENTION: If you have children, be sure to bring them with you, if you are pregnant, please come even earlier so you can be inside the chambers. If you are a pastor, please come early so you can be inside the room. When I give my speech to introduce the code consider standing. When the city council talks about the code language, be respectful and listen. You will be allowed to leave after the agenda item is finished.

Thank you for your consideration to put your gospel shoes on and join me on the field for action on behalf of the child in the womb for the glory of God.

I’ll see you Sunday at church and/or Monday downtown Twin Falls!

How Did the Para-Church Become the Expert?

Last week I met with local pastors in the Magic Valley from Burley to Hagerman, Jackpot to Twin Falls to prepare ourselves for a strategic plan to speak to the Twin Falls, City Council and prepare to engage God’s people to interact with state legislators concerning the abolishing of abortion in the state of Idaho.

As I Read Scripture and pray over this day with desire to remain focused on the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ as described by the Bible only I’m finding myself shocked at how little many expect from the church anymore.

Does anyone turn to the church to know about reaching children and youth? Maybe, but be sure of this, the church will turn to the para-church publishing house to train and program the methodology. What happened to a day when God’s people would turn to their Bible and seek God for the best way to reach the children?

Does anyone expect a leading voice from the church when it comes to feeding the poor? Likely the church is going to turn to the para-church food kitchen or food bank to regulate how to do this for them.

There was a day when the community would turn to the church to care for the orphan, sadly, today, the church has largely given this God ordained duty to the government.

If you want to influence city, county, state, or national issues with a moral base you will be hard pressed to find a church anywhere willing to engage. There was a day when all would look to the moral buttress, the church, the pillar of truth. The danger today is that the church has abdicated this off to the para-church lobbyist. We’ve been encouraging God’s people to contribute to the para-church so that the para-church can represent our values. The problem today is that many of the para-church lobbyist are not held accountable to the church and the church assumes they are the experts. It is time for the church to not only continue pressing the government to defund Planned Parenthood, it may as well be time to defund the para-church.

It is time, church, we must not leave our post as an abandoned post.

We are told (we even tell ourselves) “you can’t legislate morality.” We seem to have forgotten that that is part of the work of the government, to legislate moral and just laws. We also must know that a government does not have the capacity to be moral or remain moral if an imputed righteous people remain silent.

It is a more true statement that you can’t legislate righteousness. Righteousness is something that only God deposits upon an unrighteous person because of his depravity, inability to be righteous.

But, because the church has largely stepped out of the conversation on the topic of humanity and decided to hire the “experts” to speak for us we are now in communities that are not that interested in what we have to say about morality, or righteousness on any matter. Our communities look at the “right to life” groups and pregnancy centers as the “experts” on matters of life and they view the church more as the “experts” on summer daycare extravaganzas and free cotton candy.

This is for sure, if morality is not legislated, and that from a position of absolute truth, it will not be long before the immoral community begins to legislate immorality.

Welcome to today.

Church, return to your post in the community as a pillar and buttress of truth. From this place don’t forget your need to proclaim the gospel and call all people, everywhere, to believe and repent.

It’s a good day to be the church.

Book Review: “The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates”

Today, I will begin a chapter by chapter review of a book on the doctrine of the lesser magistrates. Where I’ve been familiar with the language of the lesser magistrates and teachings on biblical jurisdiction I’ve never read a formal examination of the larger idea.

Why am I reading this book? I’ve been engaged in addressing my local, state and national representatives/senators for most of my adult life. I’ve learned a lot on how and why to engage as a pastor/Christian citizen obey the just laws of the land while not compromising obedience to God. While I’m currently working with several people to abolish abortion in Idaho and to at least appeal to my local city and county to introduce code that would not allow any one or any organization to to murder the human fetus in the womb, I am convinced I need to navigate this issue with a clear working knowledge of how to do this with a Biblical application and practice. So, I want to read what others are thinking then bring all of this thinking to the right plumb line of Scripture for proper application and practice.

I was recently given a copy of “the Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates” by some new friends. From time to time I have done what I call a “live” book review of books that appear to be of significant weight. This will actually be the fifth live book review. Each of the previous live book reviews proved to be helpful for me. Exercises like this are as much a work of discipline for me to articulate thoughts while they are fresh on my mind.

I’ve read several articles and pamphlets by the author, Matthew Trewhella, and find his thoughts challenging and founded upon Scripture. A thinking man who makes biblical application of precepts and principles is always a refreshing exercise of the body, mind, and soul.

You are invited to think with me in what I review from Trewhella’s work “the Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates.”

Here are several online resources you may find of interest…

I’ll begin the live review shortly after I (re) read the table of contents.

Below is a helpful video that will help explain or introduce the doctrine of the lesser magistrates if this idea is new to your thinking.

The Wells Are Plugged Up

This was my Twin Falls, Times News column from this past weekend published in the Saturday edition.

The Wells Are Plugged Up

No one living in southern Idaho can underestimate the value of water.

I collect rain water off  half my garage to water my garden. This is effective as long as the clouds rain rain. What happens when the clouds rain no rain?

Anyone who lives in a desert region knows that at some point the rain will likely stop. When this happens, usually around July, the thriving community will need a good source of water. If no consideration has been made in the cool days of rain, no life will survive the blistering heat of the scorching sun when there is no rain.

A student of history knows that there have been many historic battles fought over water rights. We even see this in that ancient holy book, the Bible.

In Genesis 26, the reader learns that after Abraham died, the Philistines came along and plugged up all of Abraham’s wells. The Philistines filled the wells to pollute, clog, and render them useless for the descendants of Abraham. Their hatred for God and His people was so high that they were willing to murder them by shutting off the water, that supply all of society needs to thrive. Without it, the people can’t live. That was their aim, ending the life of Abraham’s family. They obviously didn’t want the water, they wanted the people to suffer and ultimately die.

Today, we tell ourselves we live in a much more “civilized”, “enlightened” day. We don’t intentionally contaminate other people’s water. No one is going to shut the water supply off because of one’s religion,  no one is going to clog up the well of the farmer just because he’s a God fearer.

However, there are God fearing people in the land and there is a growing hatred of them. If one looks at the issue of life, it is evident that hatred of image-of-God-bearing babies in the womb is growing. This continues to dominate attention in our day.

Forget about what New York State has done, never mind the cruelty of Virginia, don’t focus solely on  what the governor of New Mexico has vowed to do. Look right here. Look in the county and city of Twin Falls. Open your eyes to what victory the war campaign of death has made in our own land of Idaho.

There is a bill sitting on the desk of Rep. Steven Harris, the chairman of the State Affairs Committee, that would make abortion (murder of babies in the womb) illegal in Idaho. I sat in his office this week to appeal to his conscience to open the gate to let this bill in for committee work. When I asked him if he would print the bill, he said “no, I will not”. If you remember your School House Rock, you’ll remember this is where a bill gets worked on, fine tuned, and adjusted; or the bill dies in that committee altogether. The “Idaho Abortion Human Rights Act” remains on the desk of the committee chairman because he apparently fears it will pass the house and the senate and would soon be ready for the governor’s signature..The  enemy of God has a hatred of image-bearing-lives and he has convinced a chairman to sit on the bill that would otherwise let the babies live.

One thing the reader discovers as they read through  Genesis 26 is that Isaac would eventually come along and dig out the wells. He would remove everything the Philistines had polluted the wells with, he would remove all the junk, all the dirt, all the garbage. While doing so, he would once again reclaim the splendor of the desert with life.

To the faithful, God fearing followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, as described by the Bible: Rise up today with your gospel shovel and let’s dig out the “wells” the Philistines have plugged up. Strap on your Gospel shoes and let’s get to work.

There is one organization, lead by an evil, God-hating agenda to plug up life in our city, county, state, and nation. May God mobilize His people- His church, and find them actively purifying  the decades old plugged up wells.

Gather this Lord’s day with a people longing to hear a report about God from a living pulpit lit by the Word of God. Gather there and pray, gather there and prepare, gather there with your “Gospel shovels”, it’s work day at the church house.

Idaho Abortion Human Rights Act (unofficial update)

This has been a busy week in the Idaho legislative session. But the Idaho Abortion Human Rights Act still sits waiting for direction from the chairman of the State Affairs Committee, Steven Harris.

Let me encourage you to not lose heart. Remember, believer, our hope is in Christ, not politicians.

As of February 28, 2019, 12:30 p.m.

On February 27, Renee and I drove to Moscow to be on Cross Politic. This was a humble pleasure.

We met Scott Herndon from Northern Idaho (see video). Scott gave helpful information about what major hurdles the Idaho Abortion Human Rights Act is currently facing. This will help explain why there is some confusion with a mass email reply from Rep. Steven Harris in the past few days about why this bill has not been given a hearing yet.

Listen in to the conversation with Cross Politic here.

You should make stopping by their site a regular stop. Theses guys are good thinkers, they are skilled in using the logical thinking process, they know how to ask good questions, and they know how to laugh with and at with respect. This is a rare thing. That said, even though they baptize their babies, you should listen in. And visit their site regularly.

An Apparent Conflict in Oklahoma

For me to write publicly is a living lesson of how careful I have to be. I write as a pastor of Eastside Baptist Church because that’s what my church called me to do, but nothing I write, without church congregational approval, is an official statement of the church I pastor. Nothing I write in the paper, nothing I say on the radio, nothing I write on my personal blog page is ever an official statement of my church. That said, everything I say or right is a public representation of the people I lead. Which is why, when I was recently dubbed a “Christmas Turd” on the local Craigslist Rants and Raves because of my ongoing newspaper column I was asked to write years ago, I stop for reflection of how that public opinion about me, and the church I pastor, is cause for careful examination.

Not to be less bold, to be extremely careful.

Yesterday, the Baptist Messenger, a publication by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO) released an open letter to Oklahoma Baptists regarding abortion and protecting human life.

In light of the political attention rising from an awakening conscience across the nation and the pending Idaho Abortion Human Rights Act introduced to the Idaho House of Representatives State Affairs Committee three weeks ago, I find the released open letter by the GBCO a confusing voice in the current movement to abolish abortion in the state of Oklahoma.

I’m far removed from the public discussion in the state of Oklahoma so consider my observation moot in their conversation. My take is only from that of a distant kinsman.

What I like about what the GBCO open letter said…

  • “The BGCO is categorically opposed to abortion, and it is our prayer and goal to see lives saved and an end to abortion in Oklahoma and beyond.”
  • “We will continue to strive for the day in which every human life—unborn and born—in this state and beyond is protected. With all the strength God gives us, we resolve to build a culture of life that recognizes each person is made in His image (Gen. 1:27). God help us.”

I can get behind this and say that neither of those statements surprise me.

However, what does surprise me, and likely many others is that a state convention released an open letter that would at the same time not support a bill that would otherwise abolish abortion all together. Admittedly, as I said earlier, I am far removed from Oklahoma. I want to know what these brothers see that I don’t. I want to believe that they are acting in good conscience under the leading of right thinking.

Furthermore, my confusion is not disconnected from their open letter. (Mind you, they did not right this open letter to Baptists in Idaho.) Baptist polity is a very unique critter. We are independent and voluntarily cooperate or agree. I think it is fitting for a Baptist institution to speak out, but as that independent institution not on behalf of the others. In other words, I don’t mind that the BGCO spoke into the political discussion, I wish more would. I don’t even mind that their conclusion is different than mine. It is more true that no Baptist in Oklahoma is waiting to hear what a Baptist in Idaho has to say. One thing I continue learning is that disagreements mostly help us better articulate.

This much I’m certain we agree upon, only the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, as described by the Bible alone, will change the intent of the heart of any issue facing our states or united nation. Nothing, save the blood of Jesus at His death.

My concern/confusion is where it appears they are speaking on behalf of all Baptists in Oklahoma. As I understand Baptist polity, I know they are not. It does seem confusing to weigh in with conclusion on a bill’s demise before it is even tested. Every bill has to eventually be tested with skilled arguments and an eventual ruling.

  • The open letter makes it appear certain that “SB 13 will (likely) be invalidated immediately by the courts, if it passes at all, and we cannot save lives with legislation that never goes into effect.”
  • I never want anyone to act against their conscience, but for a Baptist institution to claim “In the meantime, we cannot in good conscience get behind SB 13 as it is proposed” seems unclear at best. To claim to be historic advocates for the unborn, and I think they are, and then “in good conscience” not support a bill to abolish abortion, is most confusing.

I will continue to watch what is going on in Oklahoma while actively appealing to God to raise up a voice from pastors in the state of Idaho to assure our legislators we want them to give the Idaho Abortion Human Rights Act a day for debate.

Here, on this matter, I think it better to have tried and lost than to have never tried at all. I think Oklahoma Baptists have been trying, and may God grant them grace to live in a state one day that forbids the murdering of babies born and unborn.

May God give this grace to a state in the union this legislative session. My prayer, may it be Idaho! This seems nearly impossible because the bill still sits idle at the chairmans desk and one of my representatives (Rep. Clow) does not want this bill open for debate. Nothing is impossible for my God.

May the conscience of the Idaho legislators be awakenened in our day. If not in Idaho, may God give this mercy to Oklahoma in this day. If not in Oklahoma, Texas; if not in Texas, South Carolina; if not South Carolina, then in the most unlikely place of the state of Washington where just this week a bill was introduced to do the same.

Definition of “Induced Abortions”

May God have mercy and awaken the conscience of the city.

The annual report from Idaho Health and Welfare can be found at https://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/Portals/0/Health/Statistics/2016-Reports/2016_Abortion.pdf.

Rather than protecting Idaho’s most vulnerable, this agency is reporting the state’s legal induced abortions with copious details. These abortions, protected by federal law, take place in large numbers within the city limits of Twin Falls, Idaho.

According to Idaho Health and Welfare, induced abortions are defined as “a legal medical procedure that is intended to terminate a pregnancy without a live birth.”

Those are not my words, they are the words selected by the Idaho Health and Welfare Department.

If words mean anything, and they do, then every word here needs to be examined. Induced: this word describes an action that is “produced” or “caused” by an outside force acted upon another. Abortion: “the act producing young before the natural time or before the fetus is perfectly formed. In the figurative sense, any fruit or produce that does not come to maturity, or any thing which fails in its progress, before it is matured or perfect. The fetus brought forth before it is perfectly formed. The termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus.”

By definition alone, using our English words we are saying in broad daylight that induced abortions are outside acts introduced to a living embryo or fetus (human, person). This is a forced act upon the embryo or fetus to stop (read that again, To STOP) it from naturally growing to maturity. Forcing the embryo or fetus to die before it is matured.

It’s right there in the words. But there’s more to observe.

What “medical” procedures need a qualifier of “legal”? Obviously, the full definition of “Induced Abortion” needs this qualifier to keep the conscience at arms length, quiet, and sitting in the corner. If the definition of “Induced Abortion” by the Idaho Health and Welfare did not include the word “legal”, no one with an awakened conscience would allow this to continue as it is. The word “legal” is more like a gag and a blindfold for the conscience of our community.

Read that definition again without the word “legal.”

A medical procedure that is intended to terminate a pregnancy without a live birth.”

We could finish the examination of the definition, but it is clear. This induced act is intended to terminate a pregnancy without a live birth. I can’t ever read that without the sound of every word crying out to my conscience to wake up.

Now, in closing, consider the statistics.

In 2016, in the city of Twin Falls, according to the Idaho Health and Welfare Vital Statistics, there were 242 “induced abortions”; that is, 242 medical procedures intended to terminate a pregnancy without a live birth.

You read that right, 242 forced terminations of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus.

God have mercy on the city of Twin Falls.

In Wrath Remember Mercy

This past week on the weekly Pastors Round Table, with Bear Morton, Christopher Folkers, and Keith Thompson (no relationship) we had the opportunity to speak about the Pastors of Idaho Mercy Statement.

Listen here to the conversation, pray for our state legislators, pass this on to a pastor you know, encourage them to sign this statement.

Thank you to Bill Colley and news radio 1310 KLIX. Bill hosts this weekly one hour segment during his Magic Valley This Morning program from 6 a.m. – 10 a.m. Monday through Friday. Pastors Round Table is every Thursday from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Signers of the Pastors of Idaho Mercy Statement

After one day of appealing to pastors across the state of Idaho we have 34 signing a unified statement to Idaho legislators showing our support of the Idaho Abortion Human Rights Act.

I’m rejoicing in the Lord for these 34 early signers. May God give us hundreds more. If your pastor wants to sign this unified statement send him to this link: https://www.paulthompsonblog.com/the-pastors-of-idaho-mercy-statement/

At this point, there are more cities without pastors signing the statement than cities with pastors signing it. I’m asking you to help us spread the word. We must be ready to act quickly in a day like this. Thank you for contacting your pastor or pastors you know who would be willing to sign with us.
