Do the Work of an Evangelist

Yesterday afternoon one of those who did the work of an evangelist died, and yet he lives.

John Requa, age 87, passed away of natural causes on February 27, 2018.

John was born in Twin Falls to Dillard and Ruth Requa on March 14, 1930. Following graduation from Twin Falls High School, he joined the Air Force and served in the Korean war as a machinist. John is survived by his wife Helen Requa, children Daryl and Gary Jemison of Twin Falls, Kieth and Linda Bloyd of Italy, Pat and Abby Gribble of Florida, Pat and Jane Brosseau of Washington and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

John loved the LORD and served Him faithfully at Eastside Southern Baptist Church in Twin Falls. He cherished his church family.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Eastside Southern Baptist Church in Twin Falls.

In lieu of flowers, make donations to Eastside Southern Baptist Church for New Horizon Home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Doug Pullin: He died with His Work Boots On

Funeral service for Doug Pullin will be on Saturday, February 3, at 2:00 p.m. (the service will be streamed live HERE)

His obituary was published today in the Times News HERE.

I’ve known Doug for longer than I’ve been the pastor of Eastside Baptist Church. I fist met Doug and Angie and their sons while I pastored in Fairfield, Idaho. Doug has been a faithful participating member of Southern Baptist work in the Magic valley for several decades. He was known for being a hard worker, a faithful friend, devoted to his family, and steadfast with established churches, supporter of mission churches and the advancement of the Gospel.

Doug was not a cliche. He really was a quiet man and was listened to when he did speak. From my vantage point, Doug understood the value of a good name. I think he thought deeply before speaking and sharing his opinion on a matter. He let others speak their mind. His silence was not disagreement and His silence was not approval. He was simply just a quiet man.

The news of his passing has come hard on all of us. While driving to the work site to meet up with Angie last Thursday, I recalled, like most of us, the last time I saw Doug was on the Lord’s Day, with his family.

Just like he lived his life, “he died with his work boots on.”

Join me on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Eastside Baptist Church at 2pm and be captured by Doug’s savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

I took this picture one day after church.

Theology and the Funeral Service

Where I live, today is a big day.

In the common human experience of life, all will die. The funeral service exposes theology of the person, the preacher, and the more.

I do not embrace Mormon doctrine as orthodox in any way and hold that the Mormon religion is a cult.

This does not diminish the real common human experience of all of humanity; death. Real people are sad, real people are hoping, real people are mourning. I will watch the funeral service online and update some observations of the theology of Mormonism as the service for the late president Thomas S. Monson unfolds.

I don’t mean any disrespect in my observation. It is purely a look at the theology of a professing “church” that is not really the church.

Visual observation:

  • Choir – as always, the best face of the Mormon religion is the musical skill, talent and beauty of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. If there is a matter that creates greater confusion of Mormonism it is this talent that God has given for the worship and glory of the true God, allows praise of this skill to another. This may actually be one of the most complicated matters to reconcile. Like the Piano Guys, talented, skilled, enjoyable to the ear, the Jesus of the Mormon religion is not the Jesus of the Bible; there is no way to reconcile or argue that they are the same at all.
  • The video shots of the crowd look as though the building is full, but a few shots show large sections in the back completely empty.
  • The face of conservative and wholesomeness can not be ascertained by appearance only.
  • That massive pipe organ.

Examination of the speakers:

  • Language (words and phrases): Testimony, God, Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, Well done thou good and faithful servant, heaven, blessings, prayer, Courage, Comfort, angels, family, atonement, Seal, eternal family, prophet… (nearly everyone of these words and phrases require study for clarity in what Mormon theology means and what the Bible teaches.
  • Quotes from: the Bible, Doctrine and Covenant,
  • Emotions: joy, sorrow, tears, laughter, calculated
  • Props: reading from teleprompters, flowers, plants
  • president of the quorum of the 12 gave the final message; president Russell Nelson. (clearly reading from a teleprompter)

I reserve my observation of the speaking until a further date. But let me express this in my overall observation. I must preach the gospel at the funerals I officiate over. The biblical gospel of the nature of God, the sin of men, the wrath satisfying atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ’s death on the cross, and the transforming from mortal man to immortality by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Bible believing followers of the Lord Jesus Christ as described by the Holy Bible alone, be careful of wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Marjorie J. (Shields) Lawley “Marge”, age 77, passed away on January 21, 2016, at St. Luke’s Clinic in Jerome, Idaho. She was born in Englewood, Colorado, October 9, 1938, and grew up in Buena Vista, Colorado, which was always “home” to her. Her parents were Earl Shields and Florence (Wheeler) Shields, now
deceased. She is survived by her husband Gene of the home in Twin Falls, Idaho; two children Grant and his wife, Tricia and their two children, Luke and Grace, of California, and LaNell Nelkin and her husband, Maksim , and their two children, Ana and Sasha, of Colorado. She is also survived by one sister, Ginger Behrman and her husband Bill of Colorado, and one brother, Bud Shields and his wife Frankie of Texas, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. One sister Pat Shields is deceased. Margie developed many friendships in her lifetime before and since coming to southern Idaho in 1971. Her kindness and responsive ear drew people to her with a warmth that caused many to think of her as their “proxy” Mom. The evidence of the love of Christ in her life and her apparent gift of encouragement brought out a radiance of joy, peace and gladness in spite of her ongoing physical struggles. It is certain that she will be missed by many, and she would want all who knew her to join her in her new home with Jesus in heaven. Her physical remains will be deposited at her parents’ gravesite in Buena Vista, Colorado. The memorial service will be on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 9:00 am at the Eastside Baptist Church, in Twin Falls, Idaho. In lieu of flowers you may make a donation to either of these Christian ministries: Eastside Baptist Church for the Haiti Girls Home, 204 Eastland Dr. N, Twin Falls, ID 83301 of the Behrman Ministries, P.O. Box 1203, Buena Vista, Co 81211. Arrangements are under the direction of Rosenau Funeral Home, Twin Falls.
