Father, Glorify your Name!

“Father, glorify your name.” then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” (John 12:28)

This coming Lord’s Day I will take a side path in the Isaiah preaching series and move to the Gospel of John (12:20-50).

This is a four message examination of this passage from John that includes Jesus telling of his death, fulfillment of prophesy from Isaiah, the establishment of the new covenant, and the proclamation of God to save believing confessors of Jesus the Christ.

  • Palm Sunday (Lord’s Day, March 25, 10:30 a.m.): The Purpose
  • Mid Week (Wednesday, March 28, 6:30 p.m.): Jesus Hid Himself in Prayer
  • Covenant Thursday (Thursday, March 29, 6:30 p.m.): Pre-death Command to Remember His Death
  • Resurrection Sunday (Lord’s Day, April 110:30 a.m.): He Did Nothing on His Own Initiative

Join me and my church family, Eastside Baptist Church, at 204 Eastland Drive North in Twin Falls, during these dates as we remember our Lord’s death and rejoice in the power of the resurrection.

For Church and Family (007) Clothing

In this short clip I give instructions about training children in how they dress and behave at the church house on the Lord’s Day. Talk about why we dress differently on the Lord’s Day than any other day. The why is very important on this topic.

Tips for Church and Family

  • Parents:
    • We are not building a case for a dress code. As a parent, we want to train our children about the significant event we are going to participate in and we dress significantly different for significant occasions.
    • Make the plans on Saturday night for what each of the children will wear on Sunday morning. This will help so that there is less stress on the Lord’s Day for finding the matching socks, locating a belt, or what color shirt/blouse goes with what color pants/dress.
    • Make this a normal routine while they are young. Remember you are training a child in a pattern or way. Make this a special routine with special treats upon occasion.
    • Model this in what you wear.
  • Church:
    • Encourage parents who are doing this. This is not an easy thing to do on early Lord’s Days. It is a lot of work and effort.
    • If you speak about a child’s clothing, be sure to only mention the clothing.
    • If you see families dressing nicely on the Lord’s Day, consider helping them by setting an example for them and their children.
    • Show these young ones in our congregation that this special gathering deserves nice clothing.

NOTE: This is not a matter to get too worked up on. But don’t miss the benefit that this is. It is not a small thing.

For Church and Family (002) Teach Children to Anticipate the Lord’s Day

In today’s post I encourage parents to teach their children to treat the Lord’s Day as an anticipated event when we gather at the church house, and when we go to the church house it is different than when we go to the park.

Tips for Church and Family:

  • Parents:
    • Take time this week to train your children what rowdy behavior is and when and where it is appropriate to behave like that.
      • You could even make a game out of it with pictures of places that it is appropriate to use a loud voice or when it is appropriate to use a quiet voice.
      • Ask your children how they think they should behave in different places and why.
      • Be sure to speak about the difference between being quiet at the movie house and quiet at the church house may be similar for behavior at the church house is different, and why its different.
      • Be sure to explain why it’s o.k. to be loud and rowdy at some places and not others. They need to know why.
      • Talk about God everyday. Not as someone we go visit on the Lord’s Day, but the one we gather with others to worship at the same place, on the same day, at the same time.
    • Build an expectation for the Lord’s Day. Make a big deal about it. Talk about it all week long. All of us plan our lives around what we anticipate.
  • Church:
    • Be sure to speak to the children at the church house on the Lord’s Day. This will increase the desire in them to want to come.
    • Be sure to model for the children in our church what adults look like who anticipate gathering on the Lord’s Day.

the God of Sports

It’s that time of year again, “Sundays become optional” for some and the Lord of the sport becomes ruler of the Lord’s Day. This will be interpreted as legalism by some and misunderstood by others that enjoying a sport is somehow considered wrong. It’s not wrong or sinful. It’s not a legalistic position that a person can’t enjoy an afternoon nap.. I mean game. It’s one thing for us to participate or enjoy a game. It’s of another discussion when Sundays become optional during a season, series or particular game.

Determine for yourself this day who the Lord of the Lord’s day is; if you choose the Lord, you won’t be disappointed if you choose to gather with the Lord’s people while you miss the “game of the year.”
