Do You Love Me?

I’ve been told in various settings that there are no dumb questions and no wrong answers. I’ve lived long enough to prove both of those statements wrong. I am still trying to master the art of asking good questions.

Here are a few of the good questions…

  • “If a man dies, will he live again?” (Job 14:14)
  • “Does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36)
  • “What will my life be like tomorrow?” (James 4:14)
  • “What shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”  (Matthew 27:22)

These questions must be asked. They require being answered truthfully.  The most important questions are asked of mankind, by Deity.

  • “Do you love me?” When Jesus asked this question of Peter, it required an answer.

The events leading to this question began days earlier. It was on the night Jesus was betrayed, he met with the disciples to observe the Passover. Jesus shocked them with the statement, “one of you will betray me” (Matthew 26:21). The disciples began to respond to this statement with questions, “Lord, is it me?” But Peter, characteristically, boasted that he would never betray the Lord. “These other guys my fail you, Lord, but not me!” Peter assured Jesus that he would be faithful through death.

Just a few hours later Peter would be proven unfaithful and unable to defend the Lord’s honor.

There’s good news that comes after this crushing behavior of Peter.

He must have felt such shame and regret that he was so weak. But Jesus completed his work in Peter by restoring him and instructing him to “feed the Lord’s sheep” (John 21:15-17).

Paul Powell, in his book, Jump Starting Dead Churches, lays out three arguments of how we should answer this question should the Lord be asking us, “do you love me?”

  • Love the Lord supremely
  • Love the Lord actively
  • Love the Lord Openly

What a challenge. God wants us to be right with him. He knows that unless he builds the church, the gates of Hell will overcome her. The Spirit is willing to love the Lord supremely, actively and openly. But the flesh is too weak to do this. When we attempt to love the Lord from the works of the flesh we are not strong enough to follow through with our love. We are only strong enough to love the Lord when we repent of trying to love him only in the flesh, and plead with him to strengthen us to love him.

It’s one thing to know the Lord, quite another to be known by the Lord. Where it is important to ask good questions, it is perhaps more important to answer the questions posed by the Lord. “Do you love me?”

Significant Scripture

Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. (1 Thess 5:24 NASB)

This is one of many places in Scripture where we hear of God being faithful and completing His promises. His faithfulness binds Him to finish what he begins. That which God says is that which God does. This is significant to me in that it displays a characteristic of God that is spectacular.

There are countless times when I have said I would do something only to later prove how faithless I am. My family knows this better than anyone. There are no times like this when God behaves like this.

And this is a path that God is moving me down; to be like Him.

Pastor’s Corner Column at MagicValley.com: December 8, 2012

Two weeks with WordPress has stretched me in technology knowledge. I’m not any more the wiser, but I’m certainly pleased with the migration from Blogspot to WordPress. On Saturday’s I will hope to post a weekly review and a few things I’m working on.

Monday, December 3:

  • Squirming in Your Blood: On the day (maybe the very hour) this child was born, she was abandoned. Her navel cord was not properly cut, she was not washed or wrapped in a blanket. When people saw the infant they must have assumed she was dead, for no one even gave her a second look with pity or had compassion for her. (continue reading)

Tuesday, December 4:

  • My ToolBox: I thought I would show you a look inside this pastor’s tool box. These four resources are a ‘must have’ for me. The Lord provided all four of these books through the generosity of his people. I’m Thankful to the Lord for them. (continue reading)
  • How Old Are You?: This question comes up several times a year from the students on my bus. Today, the conversation went down like this… (continue reading)

Wednesday, December 5:

  • In the News: The Intermountain Christian News asked me to write a short article for the December 2012/January 2013 edition about the Utah/Idaho Southern Baptist Annual Meeting. It was published yesterday. This resource is a good place to find out what’s going on in the inter-mountain region of Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Montana, and Wyoming. HERE (page 9) And my monthly column in the Times News will be published this weekend, look for it on Saturday, December 8. (continue reading)

Coming in 2013:
I’m working on the details of a weekly podcast. I’ve been reading about how to produce a podcast. I’m working on a format, plan, ideas and topics. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to leave me some ideas. I’m also open to the technical side of things, this is an area of great unknown for me. Until I’m ready to launch this in a format that I am able to feel comfortable with and ready to launch this as a weekly podcast, I’ll just continue reading, learning and preparing.

Weekly Prayer Guide

“Devote Yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving; praying at the same time for us as well, that God will open up to us a door for the word, so that we may speak for the the mystery of Christ, for which I have also been imprisoned; that I may make it clear in the way I ought to speak.” Colossians 4:2-4

How Old Are You?

This question comes up several times a year from the students on my bus. Today, the conversation went down like this…

Student: Paul, how old are you?
Me: How old do you think I am?
Student: 39?
Me: (smiling) thank you. Guess again?
Student: 86?
Me: (puzzled) How do you go from 39 to 86?
Student: I just noticed all the grey in your beard.
Me: (Looking in the mirror) wow, look at all of that, but I am not 86 either?
Student: Then how old are you?
Me: 46
Student: WOW! you are older than my dad.
Another Student: You’re older than my mom.
Yet Another Student: I have an uncle who just turned 40.
Me: I’m older than all of your parents, now sit down so I can take you home and I can go home and take a nap.

My ToolBox

I thought I would show you a look inside this pastor’s tool box. These four resources are a ‘must have’ for me. The Lord provided all four of these books through the generosity of his people. I’m Thankful to the Lord for them.

The American Dictionary is a very helpful resource. This resource has been used often

and is a treasure.

AMG Publishers has many Bible study aids. Their resource library is extensive and for students of all degrees. To prepare a sermon without these resources could derail a pastor like me. Like a carpenter trying to build without a plumb-line, I would not want to give exhortation on the things of God without a standard of the original languages of Hebrew and Greek. For this pastor, it would be a risky thing. And with eternity in the balance, I want to be as prepared as can be with the original language. I’m grateful to the Lord for these resources.

I use the New American Standard Bible version of the AMG Publications Word Study Series dictionary, both old and new testament Complete WordStudy lexicons. The American Dictionary of the English Language is a must for me.

Next time I open the tool box I’ll show you some of my online resources and electronic aids that are used every day.

Squirming in Your Blood

The nativity means something special to many people. When the word nativity is used, nearly all people will immediately think of the birth place or circumstances of the birth of Christ.

But what about this nativity.

On the day (maybe the very hour) this child was born, she was abandoned. Her navel cord was not properly cut, she was not washed or wrapped in a blanket. When people saw the infant they must have assumed she was dead, for no one even gave her a second look with pity or had compassion for her.

Someone must have actually picked up the infant and thrown her into an open field, because this is where a compassionate man passed by the field. When he passed by the infant, he was moved with compassion as he saw her squirming in her blood. He picked her up, clothed her and took her home. Here he cleaned the infant up, gave her a home, called her his own, he included her in his inheritance. She grew up with protection and provision. She developed into a beautiful woman. He continued to give her his best. She was clothed in the best, ate the best, and lived in the best. The fame of her story traveled everywhere. People knew about her, far and near. This was  a beautiful and romantic story of how this man cared for her.

But then tragedy struck.

Read the remainder of this story in Ezekiel 16

Significant Scripture

Have you been reading your bible this past week? Would you be willing to share a significant passage you read and why it was a timely word for you from God? I would like to hear what you are reading and how it is impacting your life. Share your thoughts here.

4 The rabble who were among them had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, “Who will give us meat to eat? 5 “We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, 6 but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this manna.” (Numbers 11:4-6 NASB)
