Press On

Press On is a podcast venture I began over one year ago. I have done a few short podcast events related to my blog page in the past. This too will mostly be an extension of my blog but with more intentional content related to pressing on in a crazy day like this, for the Glory of God.

I’m not predicting an official launch date as I still have some details to work out on the postscript side of things… but soon, I hope.

This past week has been filled with tragedy with the murderous acts of the woman in Nashville who murdered 3 students and 3 adults at Covenant Christian School. Followed with mass confusion by liberal media in how to report on a story of this kind that does not fit the narrative they want to tell.

My exhortation to you as the week comes to a close that we gather our families with courage at your local church-house this Lord’s Day. Instruct your children to enter the gates with the shout of joy and sing to the maker of heaven and earth.
Our president and his media puppets have called for the rising of their rainbow flag and will demand you salute it and bow down to their god.

13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13-14 NASB

Is It Revival?

I will post a few observations on what is being reported as a “revival” at Asbury University. These will be bullet point observations for personal consideration of what can/should at least be considered as something that is happening at a few (as of today) universities.

  • I don’t know of any pastor who has not prayed for revival/awakening.
  • I have been praying for revival/awakening for years.
  • I pray with other pastors for revival/awakening.
  • Something has been going on at Asbury University. As of today, February 16, 2023, there has been an ongoing gathering at the universities chapel. It is reported that students remained to pray and sing after the weekly chapel service over one week ago. It has been uninterrupted with people gathered in the chapel.
  • People have been traveling to Asbury University for days now to see what is going on.
  • Today, it has been reported that at least two other universities, Lee University, and Cedarville University have ongoing, multiple-day, gatherings on their campuses.
  • I have been pleased that there have been no reports of uncontrollable barking or laughter that is part of these gatherings.
  • I’ve not heard much about the Word of God being either read or preached. Mostly a response of singing.
  • It is not inconsistent with history for revivals to spontaneously happen on college campuses.
  • I think one should expect for the Word of God to be the governing order of such movements of the Holy Spirit.
  • Public repentance of public sins would be expected.
  • A drastic reduction of sin committing and criminal activity should be observable, I think.
  • Reconciliation of broken marriages, repentance of fornication, blasphemy, adultery, dishonoring of parents, idolatry, etc.
  • I would be pleased for God to pour out his Spirit anywhere. And I would continue to pray that God would do so in my day, in my city, in my church, in my heart.
  • I am not sure we should call something revival until there is evidence of revival. Marked by widespread repentance of personal and corporate sin and then a notable impact of holiness.
  • Where I sound skeptical, I am hopeful.
  • I will continue to pray. I will be pleased should God be so kind as to give repentance of personal, regional, and national sins.

Spirit of the Living God, fall fresh on me.

To your bibles, brothers and sisters, to your bibles.

Church Consulting Idolatry

In a capitalistic society, every field is an opportunity. I get this, but I have a personal dislike for how church consulting is approached.

Full Disclosure: What I am addressing here no longer concerns me in that I no longer have a voice at the table. Some will think it bad form on my part to address something I’m not part of. What Southern Baptists do anywhere will always be of concern to me. One, the vast majority of my friends are pastors in churches that participate with the Southern Baptist Convention. Two, what Southern Baptists do has big influence on Christendom around the world.

The interest is genuine and the concern is growing.

I have many friends in the Utah/Idaho Southern Baptist Convention. Because of this, it grieves me to see that the UISBC is offering a seminar next week for churches to learn how to apply for payroll refunds. This may be legal and many churches around the country have been able to apply for payroll refunds through government tax dollars. This is classical forced redistribution of wealth which the church should be standing against.

  • Did churches face real financial hardships during the COVID days? I am sure many of them did.
  • Did churches give in to the government-mandated shutdowns? Nearly every church in my city did (with very few exceptions)
  • Did churches require members to wear masks? Uggh, I’m honestly disgusted to think about how long that scam kept the Lord’s Church in fear.

So here’s the thing. I respect that not every church journeyed through the COVID days the same way I or my church did.

To offer churches a seminar to apply for payroll refunds from the government due to financially complicated days brought on by the government is an ethical dilemma worth bringing up. I won’t labor longer on this because I’m not part of the SBC any longer. But I appeal to my SBC pastor friends to speak out to the UISBC staff for answers about why they think it is advisable to encourage churches to play with the government like this. We are two + years from those days.

  • Was God not your captain then?
  • Is he not your captain today?
  • Who is giving the UISBC permission to advise the Lord’s church like this?

This is not how churches of the Living God survive and thrive. This is how churches show that their god is the government. This is really idolatry.

Repent and trust the Lord.

Tell Me The Story

A gospel preacher in rural Colorado would faithfully preach at every preaching post God would give him. He was not only my only preacher growing up, he was my dad. God used that circuit-riding preacher to plant the gospel in my life. I had the privilege to sit down with the Church and Family Life Podcast recently and told that story. Share this with your children this week. For the glory of God.

Open Letter to My Southern Baptist Kinsmen

Dear brother pastors,

This letter is intended to give a short explanation of a long conversation my beloved church has been in for over a year-and-a-half.

First, it is true that the members of Eastside Southern Baptist Church voted unanimously on November 13, in the year of our Lord, 2022, to disfellowship the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and the majority voted to disfellowship the Utah/Idaho Southern Baptist Convention (UISBC) as unqualified to trust with our cooperative mission funds. It is not that we have left the SBC, it is that the SBC has left us. Biblical ecclesiology demands we, the local church, protect the witness of Christ to our communities.

For clarity and with respect, this disfellowshipping is with the conventions – not every church or pastor in these conventions. A short explanation follows and follow-up questions are welcome from any with interest.

Backstory: Eastside Baptist Church began as a bible study under the leadership of the late Bob Schreckenburg in his home on Elizabeth Blvd. in Twin Falls, ID, in 1968 as Trinity Baptist Church. Within a few years Trinity Baptist Church relocated to 204 Eastland Drive North on the east end of Twin Falls and took on the name Eastside Southern Baptist Church, locally known as Eastside Baptist Church. Eastside Baptist Church has been pleased to partner with local Baptists in the Magic Valley Baptist Association, the Utah/Idaho Southern Baptist Convention, and the national Southern Baptist Convention. We consider this historic relationship a rich part of our global mission to take the gospel to the ends of the earth to every tribe, tongue, and nation. This local church has invested in and participated at every level possible with Southern Baptists to this end with joy.

However; since 2015, we have noticed evidence of concerns with agencies funded by the Cooperative Program, or related to the SBC.

  • There has been a growing lack of accountability within the restructuring of LifeWay Christian Resources (of which we have not trusted since approximately 2010).
  • The Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission under the recent and current leadership.
  • The public push back against abolishing abortion and unwillingness to call upon the nation for equal protection for pre-born children in the nation.
  • The North American Mission Board under current leadership. NAMB is at best compromised by the growing trend of partnerships with churches that have women pastors and the recent HeGetsUs.com campaign.
  • The Executive Committee of the SBC hiring of GuidePost to investigate and counsel on how to handle sex abuse cases.
  • Not to mention the problematic relationships with drifting views of woke ideologies and Critical Theory (Critical Race Theory) in some seminaries, as evidenced in recent SBC presidents since 2018 (such as the new www.theunifyproject.org). We have experienced an unwillingness to address the growing practice of churches in the SBC with women in pastoral roles and churches with staff members in unrepented LGBTQ+ lifestyles (even if only a few) being seated as messengers at Southern Baptist Convention meetings.

We are told these things are not happening. You were told these things are not happening at the recent UISBC annual meeting. Where there is room for disagreement amongst Baptists, these issues are related to areas of risky practices and sinfulness within the scope of partnerships. This local church (Eastside Baptist Church) is responsible and accountable to the Lord Jesus the Christ first and last. I am profoundly convinced that the North American Mission Board and the Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission are compromised with overwhelming pragmatism and have forgotten their duties to serve the local church, the bride of Christ.

We have attempted to gain as much understanding as possible at every level from our beloved kinsmen in the faith. Inquiries have been welcomed by some, yet met with resistance, nuanced explanations, and at times complete denial that these matters even exist. We have attempted in-person, face-to-face conversations with as many as possible. Where some have been willing – most have refused, declined, or not even responded. Some conversations have been helpful and received with respect. Others have been rude and even urging that Eastside would be happiest the sooner we leave.

We have communicated directly with UISBC staff and officers (primarily with staff) through these past several years. In the 21 years of pastoring Eastside Baptist Church, I have only missed four annual meetings due to unavoidable circumstances. This last one was because we could not be seated as messengers because Eastside has not given to the Cooperative Program since August of 2020 for the above-mentioned reasons. I take no issue with this reason. I actually respect our partnership and agree with our governing documents that don’t allow for churches that don’t give to the Cooperative Program to be seated. That decision was received with respect and full understanding even though the UISBC has not practiced this in past convention meetings. It is true, we have not given to the Cooperative Program since August of 2020, on purpose, while hoping to get clarification on the above concerns this local church had and still has with the SBC (primarily the agencies, agency presidents, or partners with the SBC as mentioned above). We have left intact our relationship with the Magic Valley Baptist Association so long as they will allow. We have left intact a willingness to cooperate with any church in the SBC and the UISBC. We have even left intact a willingness and a joy to cooperate with any SBC or UISBC agencies, agency presidents, and SBC efforts with an unadulterated or uncompromised relationship with the world.

Having said that: We urge our kinsmen in the faith to investigate these issues personally. Like days past, it is a most desirable conclusion of this church that the SBC will resist the climate of the wicked day. The intention of what we have done is with hope to see repentance of the wayward trajectory of the SBC in this current day while honoring the Creator of heaven and earth.

I wish to give an appeal to any pastor or church who wants to discuss our course of action and give hardy encouragement of the same. It may have happened unintentionally, but we are now in a day where the SBC has become a business enterprise rather than a cooperating clearing house of mission money and missionary sending partnerships of the Lord’s church.

Be encouraged to speak out with boldness, brother pastor. Remember, the SBC does not drive the mission of the church. Your pulpit is what God has ordained to shape the culture. The SBC will be held accountable and even judged for this, but the local church will bear the blame if we do not resist the world. The pulpit and the man in the pulpit must not be told by agencies or agency presidents what they must do or how best to reach the unconverted. We do indeed have a book, brothers, and it is sufficient. What does light have to do with darkness? Light’s relationship to darkness is to expose it because darkness cannot overcome light. Ever. It is a great day to be the church.

With joy in the Lord,

Stop Electing Republicans Who Vote Like Democrats

Election day is November 8, 2022. There is one thing many in my area know, and that is, we must stop electing Republicans who vote like democrats before it’s too late.

I have run against both of these Republicans. One is the chairman of the House Education Committee, the other does whatever (some of) her constituents tell her to do, or whatever (some of) the lobbyist convinced her is best for Idaho according to those who want to destroy Idaho.

Wake up, friends. In District 25, the city of Twin Falls, a vote for a Republican on November 8 is a vote for a Republican who votes like a Democrat.

the Rule of Law

There is nowhere for the “common sense conservatives” to hide any longer. Not even behind their “Pro-life” lobbyists. I am running for Idaho Senate on the November 8 ballot as a Constitution Party Candidate against “common sense conservative” Representative Linda Hartgen. I’m Paul Thompson and our pre-born neighbors need you to vote for me.

If you are a Republican, you will not lose by voting for me in this race. There is not a Democrat candidate in this race, I am not splitting the conservative vote here. You will finally have a conservative voice at the statehouse.

I’m not asking you to set your values aside, I’m not asking you to plug your nose to vote for me, I’m asking you to rise up to give every child in Twin Falls an advocate willing to use his voice to interpose on their behalf. We must act now to ensure that no child will ever again be protected by cowards. They will be protected by a man who knows how to stand up and speak.

An Open Letter to the Kimberly School District Board of Trustees

Every month, for the past few months, the Kimberly, Idaho School District Board of Trustees has had some level of conversation regarding a policy change (read policy here) related to gender identity and sexual orientation. August 18, 2022, is no different. The policy change is still being discussed (Read the agenda here.) What the reader needs to know is that the school board is being directed to comply with federal regulations. What the parent needs to know is that your children will continue to be the subject of the schoolhouse bullies who claim they want what is best for your children because they know better than you. Following is my letter to the Kimberly School District related to their ongoing conversation.

———————————————

Kimberly School Board
141 Center Street West
Kimberly, ID 83341

Dear Mr. Allen, Mr. Kelsey, Mr. Ward, Mr. Giles, Mr. Nield,

I am a pastor in the Magic Valley at Eastside Baptist Church in Twin Falls, ID. Like you, I have shared interests and concerns about children and their education. I am thankful to God for your devotion with respect to the general welfare of children within your jurisdiction and your responsibility with respect to the teaching of this generation.

It has come to my attention that you are considering an adaptation to meet requirements in the Title IX section of the Kimberly School District Policy Manual (specifically…policy 2320 Field Trips and policy 3570 Maintenance of School Student Records). I met with pastors in the Magic Valley on July 27, 2022, to pray for you, your staff, and families within the KSD.

We have come together to take the opportunity to assure you that you do not need to fear the threat of legal action by those who will do moral damage to the children of the Magic Valley. We understand the desire to be filled with compassion and live with understanding, even of those who may disagree with us. However, the demands to insert language of gender identity and sexual orientation by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) advocates, into the Kimberly School District Policy Manuel is a violation of reason, logic, and moral truth. You know this, parents know this, students know this, and even the activist lawyers know this. What they are doing, is the intentional suppressing of truth.

To do this only leaves confusion in the wake of the evil steamroller. You were elected to ask questions, give oversight to district spending, advocate for the district’s human resources, and encourage a way for all policies to be followed. This policy will not accomplish the intended results of helping the young souls within your care. If this policy were true it would not need to rely upon an emotional appeal, it would pass the logic test without manipulation of emotions. The sexual development of the children in our valley is best cared for in the home. Liberate the teachers from the bully advocates of evil. Give parents confidence that they can trust their children to the public education system.

For the flourishing of our community, we encourage you to reject the proposed Title IX policy changes. If a policy is desired write this policy based on truth. To insert policy based on potential emotional harm is a step toward irreversible real harm.

Social Justice, Communism, Critical Race Theory… A Way to Destroy A Nation

There is a longer conversation to have here than I’m going to lay out today. Of interest to me here at the moment is the forecasted danger of Social Justice and Critical Race Theory within the church. I simply want to put this here as an early warning of a grave sickness within the Southern Baptist Convention.

Now, understand this… I’m speaking like a weatherman in Southern Idaho. To give the forecast at this time of the year is pretty simple, usually… “Today’s weather forecast will be sunny and hot. Tomorrow’s forecast will be much like today. But next Tuesday, there is a 3% chance of an isolated afternoon thunderstorm… somewhere.”

After all is said and done weather in Southern Idaho is a simple four-season climate. That’s part of why we like living here. The hot dry days come every year but they don’t last very long. The rains come a few times a year but they will stop eventually. The snow will fly early and late sometimes but it will all melt soon.

This may be how the Southern Baptist Convention might be described – like a weatherman’s job in Southern Idaho, allegorically.

However, there is something fundamentally wrong.

This is not to say that every local independent church in the SBC has been drinking this Social Justice and Critical Race Theory kool-aid. It is looking more like someone has come in unnoticed. They came in with a familiar language. They began doing things to the foundation of a convention of churches that God has from time to time used for great advancements of the gospel and protections of the inerrancy of Scripture.

Left uncorrected, things may move along for decades like nothing has happened. Until one day we all wake up and say things like “how did we even get here?” May God grant us wisdom today to ask; “Why does the SBC actor have such big ears?” or say “My, what sharp teeth you have.” (I know, I’m mixing metaphors now, but stick with me, please.)

Let me get to the chase.

This summer I attended the Southern Baptist Convention in Anaheim, CA. On the last day of the convention, as all messengers entered the meeting-hall, we found an advertisement for a website, www.unifysbc.org. Within a short time, a video was played (don’t get me started on how much time was wasted at these meetings to show short video clips to market programs.) This video, within a few moments began to sound like another social justice program, soft-core Critical Race Theory. The trappings of Socialism and Communism. Mind you, the familiar language of the Bible was highlighted, but a close examination of the content was really what was being highlighted (“My, what sharp claws you have, grandma.”)

This is not your historic, biblical SBC.

The “SBC actor” (who is a known plagiarist) wants the SBC to trust him.

“Coming this Fall”, the website claims. That’s just a month away.

What is this highly anticipated new program for Southern Baptists? I’m being told not to be worried about it. Yet we don’t even really know what it’s about. It’s being promoted as “an innovative movement of Southern Baptist churches working toward racial unity together so the world will encounter the hope of Christ.”

I’m sorry friend, but an “innovative movement… so the world will encounter the hope of Christ.” is just risky language for this pastor to trust. There is currently no information anywhere about this promising new “innovative movement of Southern Baptist churches”. It’s like we are being told to adopt the bill and then we can read the content later to know what the bill is.

I say, “no thank you.” And I urge all of my SBC pastor friends to reject whatever comes of this www.unifysbc.org movement. The gospel never needs innovation. The advancement of the saving gospel of Jesus the Christ relies on faithfulness, not innovation.

The Gospel needs men in the pulpit who know how to fight. The pulpit needs men trained in spiritual warfare not how to perform a choreographed interpretive dance to some girly toon. Come out from among them, brothers. Their sharp teeth are the better to devour you with.
