Remembering the Days of His Youth

I recently had the privilege of sitting down across the table with my dad to begin what I will hope to be the start of a biography of his life. There are some stories that must be told.  There will likely be reflections along the writing process that will be more touching to the writer than any of the readers, but this is the privilege of the writer.

This is the story of a man captured by grace who had nothing of himself that a Holy God needed and called by his Redeemer to preach His gospel.

This is what the moment looked like as the sun was setting in the west of a man directed of God to go west.

GE

Pierce Street Baptist Church, Amarillo, Texas, August of 1954… My dad shared the story, I’ve heard it many times before, but it’s best when it comes from him. His older sister picked him up from the YMCA and before going home she stopped at Pierce Street Baptist Church because she had been invited to attend revival meetings. My dad didn’t want to go in so he stayed in the car. While waiting for her; “I eventually went in and sat as far back as I could. Everything that he preached was like he knew me, of course he didn’t, it was the Holy Spirit convicting me…”

Endangered or Extinct

Having some time with my father recently has me with a heart of gratitude toward the Lord. I will anticipate some time this coming week to spend extended time with my father to inquire about his joy in obeying the Lord in preaching the gospel. My dad represents thousands of pastors around the world who are content with little of this world to make much of the Kingdom of God. For this heritage, I’m thankful. my joy is in the Lord, my heritage of grace is undeserved from the Almighty.

This is part of that act of grace.

Heavenly treasures are a heritage. The saints of God accept them as a heritage. This is how they can be content with little of this world. A good man, by the grace of God, brings his heart to his work, then it is done well.

I look forward to introducing you to my father in the coming weeks, but for now here is a snapshot:

GE

The term bi-vocational may not be an exact translation of what the apostle Paul did, but it represents his method of ministry. My father, Clyde Thompson, was a hard worker willing to do all that was expected of him to preach. Sometimes it meant painting signs.  This kind of sign painting is of an era gone by. It is a craft lost to the modern era of vinyl lettering. The professional sign painter owns a skill that is rarely needed today.

The professional sign painter, is his profession endangered or extinct? He must decide to adjust and embrace the technology of the day or compete with ‘letter perfect’ competition of a computer. I digress; my reflection is less about the industry and more about the lost art and discipline of a hand painted sign painter.

Today, I simply give a brief reflection on my dad and his heavenly heritage. Last week we unearthed a sign he painted to advertise his bi-vocational job “Thompson Signs”. For father’s day, we will rejoice in a common spiritual treasured heritage. (Then, Lord willing, we will gather for dinner at IHOP)

* the spelling of dad with a ‘b’ is my dyslexic way of spelling dad, (dab.)

Mormonism is Not Evangelical

In two weeks Southern Baptists will gather in Houston, TX for our annual meeting. This resolution will be submitted for consideration. I think it is a helpful resolution. It brings clarity about how Southern Baptist view the evangelical and Mormon confusion that surfaced during this past political season that brought confusion. There are parts of the resolution I  would like to have seen speak with more clarity but it is helpful. I would have liked the resolution to identify Mormonism with the classification of cult, but the North American Mission Board makes this clear in the comparison examination of the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

Resolution: On the Mormon Church – Mormonism is Not Evangelical (by Dwight McKissic and Tim Rogers)

WHEREAS, Historically, Southern Baptists have embraced Christian brotherhood and cooperation with other evangelicals and

WHEREAS, We have witnessed in recent years the portrayal of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as Christian and termed an evangelical group and

WHEREAS, We have witnessed in recent years an increased call of denominations as barriers to be overcome on the road to unity and

WHEREAS, our convention along with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has a long history of affirming the sanctity of life and

WHEREAS, The Word of God, the Bible, is the complete, trustworthy, and inerrant written record of God’s revelation of Himself to man (John 16:13; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21) and

WHEREAS, The Bible reveals God as the only true, eternal Creator and self-sufficient, self-existent Sovereign of the universe, one God in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 43:10-11; 44:6-8) and

WHEREAS, Jesus Christ is the unique and eternal Son of God, the incarnate Word, who was with God and was God, and was supernaturally conceived of the Holy Spirit, without sexual relations, born of the virgin Mary (John 1:1-18; Isaiah 7:14-16; 9:6-7; Matthew 1:18-21) and

WHEREAS, True Biblical unity can only be realized in the bond of truth, and never at the expense of Biblical truth; Now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That the Southern Baptist Convention meeting, June 11-13, 2013, in Houston, Texas, urges the Boards and Agencies of the Southern Baptist Convention to maintain the historic position of Southern Baptists as they cooperate with various other groups in appropriate evangelistic enterprises, and on issues of justice, morality, and religious liberty both at home and abroad; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That such efforts not commit Southern Baptists to any organizational or long-term relationship which would risk possible compromise of historic distinctives or the unique witness of Southern Baptists to the world; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That Southern Baptists affirm the finality, sufficiency, and exclusivity of the Christian Gospel and of biblical revelation as the sole source of saving truth, “For there is no other name under heaven given among man by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12); and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED; Any group that denies the sufficiency and exclusivity of the Christian Gospel and of biblical revelation as the sole source of saving truth, while cooperating with on issues of morality, social justice, and religious liberty, will not be a group Southern Baptists cooperate with on evangelistic endeavors, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED; We call on all Southern Baptists to cooperate with all groups on issues of morality, social justice, and religious liberty while maintaining the understanding that the term “evangelical” is reserved only for those who affirm the exclusivity of salvation alone, by faith alone, through grace alone, in Christ alone, according to the scriptures alone;

AND BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED; Any group that adds to the exclusivity of Jesus Christ as the eternal son of God, or denies the work of the Holy Trinity, is not considered Christian, or part of an evangelical belief system.

Conversation with a Missionary

Last night (5/29) at the Wednesday night prayer gathering at the meeting house of Eastside Baptist Church we spoke to International Mission Board missionary Kelly Manier. Kelly and his family now live in Russia, partnering with many mission agencies in preparing for the 2014 winter games in Sochi, Russia. Visit their website here.

Imagine a church having the ability to talk in live time to Hudson Taylor, William Carey, or Lottie Moon… this was a first of many more live conversations we hope to have with the Lord’s faithful missionaries. Be looking for live conversations with other missionaries connected to Eastside Baptist Church in the coming months.

This Sunday morning (6/2) we will have missionaries to Italy, Keith and Linda Bloyd in our corporate worship gathering at 10:30AM. Gather with us on Sunday as we hear what the Spirit says to the church.

A Covenant With My Eyes

When someone you trust receives a report of the websites you visit, it changes everything. For the past eight years I have voluntarily been a member of Covenant Eyes (all pastors at Eastside Baptist Church use Covenant Eyes). Covenant Eyes is an ongoing reminder of the powerful covenant Job makes in chapter 31:1. “I have made a covenant with my eyes…”

The ease of internet activity is frightening. Anyone who doesn’t understand the reality of the trap the enemy has placed at your fingertips is likely not aware that raw sewage being poured out over your freshly cooked meal is a health risk and puts the whole family in danger, even a whole community. But surely everyone here knows that raw sewage being poured over your meal is a health risk.

There are other ministry driven resources that others use. This is not a blog to evaluate them, this is simply a reminder to all internet users to exercise courage when on the internet or anywhere that the temptation is strong. Don’t risk all things beautiful that God ordains as honoring, glorifying, pleasurable, and holy. If I can’t afford to use Covenant Eyes then I can’t afford the internet.

Job’s covenant is that he won’t let his eyes fall upon that which is not his. That is amazingly courageous and I am thankful for this bold example of keeping the portal of my mind and heart (namely, my eyes) as clean as the food I place on the dinner table to feed my family.

Covenant Eyes offers a free e-book that I just finished reading. I highly recommend it. Download it for free here.

Why?

I first met Jay Smith two summers ago while touring the British Museum. In this short video, Jay Smith gives reason from the Qur’an for the actions of last weeks tragedy in England.

the Rich Harvest of Her Hopes

I recommend this short essay on the influence a wife can have on her husband. This is J.R. Miller.

Again let me say that no wife can over-estimate the influence she wields over her husband, or the measure in which his character, his career and his every destiny are laid in her hands for shaping. The sway which she holds over him is the sway of love, but it is mighty and resistless. If she retains her power, if she holds her place as queen of his life, she can do with him as she will. Even unconsciously to her herself, without any thought of her responsibility, she will exert over him an influence that will go far toward making or marring all his future.

If she is vain and frivolous, she will only chill his ardor, weaken his resolution and draw him aside from any earnest endeavor. But if she has in her soul noble womanly qualities, if she has true thoughts of life, if she has purpose, strength of character and fidelity to principle, she will be to him an unfailing inspiration toward all that is noble, manly and Christ-like. The high conceptions of life in her mind will elevate his conceptions. Her firm, strong purpose will put vigor and determination into every resolve and act of his.

Her purity of soul will cleanse and refine his spirit. Her warm interest in all his affairs and her wise counsel at every point will make him strong for every duty and valiant in every struggle. Her bright, orderly, happy homemaking will be a perpetual source of joy and peace, and an incentive to nobler living. Her unwavering faithfulness, her tender affection, her womanly sympathy, her beauty of soul, will make her to him God’s angel indeed, sheltering, guarding, keeping, guiding and blessing him. Just in the measure in which she realizes this lofty ideal of wifehood will she fulfill her mission and reap the rich harvest of her hopes.

Such is the ‘woman’s lot’ that falls on every wife. It is solemn enough to make her very thoughtful and very earnest. How can she make sure that her influence over her husband will be for good, that he will be a better man, more successful and more happy because she is his wife? Not by any weak resolving to help him and be an uplifting inspiration to him; not by perpetual preaching and lecturing on a husband’s duties and on manly character; she can do it only by being in the very depths of her soul, in every thought and impulse of her heart and in every fiber of her nature, a true and noble woman. She will make him not like what she tells him he ought to be, but like what she herself is.

So it all comes back to a question of character. She can be a good wife only by being a good woman. And she can be a good woman in the true sense only by being a Christian woman. Nowhere save in Christ can she find the wisdom and strength she needs to meet the solemn responsibilities of wifehood. Only in Christ can she find that rich beauty of soul, those gems and pearls of the character, which shall make her lovely in her husband’s sight when the bloom of youth is gone, when the brilliance has faded out of her eyes and the roses have fled from her cheeks. Only Christ can teach her how to live so as to be blessed and a blessing in her married life.

the Baptist Association

“From time to time, associations have been guilty of telling churches what they need rather than asking them what they need, sometimes simply providing churches with whatever the state and national denominational entities were offering. Too often, associations viewed the denominational stamp as the sign of relevance and then reacted in horror when churches did not demand the product they were selling.” (SBCLife; Baptist Associations, page 17, Pre-Convention Special Issue, 2013)

May is typically a month that receives attention to association life in Southern Baptist history. Emphasis is placed on SBC calendars every year. An association of local churches has been important to me in all of my ministry years. They’ve not all been pleasant, but the local association is vitally important to me. Because they have been vitally important, they have been extremely painful when relationships suffer.

My observation over the past two decades have left me on the verge wanting to walk away from the association as she seems to have become more of a non-functioning non-profit than a helpful partner in the gospel work of the the church. There has been a tendency, from time to time, for the association to view itself as an authority rather than a servant to the Lord’s bride, the church. I think this can be said of state conventions and national denomination agencies as they become more corporately structured and less of a roadway for partnership.

I have respect for association and denominational leaders. I think the motivation of the men and women I know personally desire to live out their role as a helper to churches and not as regional bishops or pastor to pastors. Without meaning, local pastors begin to look at association or denominational leaders as pastors to their church some how. This is not the fault of the association or denominational leader alone; I think the one that opens this door is the local pastor or church. Rather than looking to Christ, the head of the local church, the pastor or church begins to look to another.

9Marks has just published their May/June journal, and the topic is associations. I highly recommend it to all of my pastor friends and church members. The journal is lengthy as a whole but full of short articles on various helpful conversations on the need for churches to associate with churches. Enjoy…

Disaster Relief

DisaterRelief

It really doesn’t matter how often a natural disaster happens, it seems to always capture ones attention and brings a lot of things into perspective. I’m thankful to the Lord for the way American’s respond to disasters, but I’m humbled as I learn of the vast army of Disaster Relief volunteers for the Red Cross are Southern Baptists.

This coming Sunday, May 26, Eastside Baptist Church will provide a love offering to the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief ministry. All money given to this love offering will go directly to the SBC Disaster Relief Ministry of the North American Mission Board. Make checks out to Eastside Baptist Church and put SBC Disaster Relief in the memo.

New Horizon International

NewHorizonInternationalI’m excited to introduce you to New Horizon International. New Horizon International (NHI) is a new ministry born in the heart of a dear friend of mine, Alex Veillard. I first met Alex outside an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 2010. Over the past nine years Alex and I have had many experiences together.

Our friendship began as a result of hardship. An gospel response to a natural disaster is what sent me to Haiti and it was a global media response to the false arrest of 10 Americans that sent Alex to minister to us when few were willing to even admit they knew us. These events were used of God to glue us together with the blood of Christ as brothers.

New Horizon Home

In the past few years many things have developed in our lives. Both of my sons have married, Alex has married, now has four sons, and now a common desire for the nations to hear the gospel has crossed our paths. This is New Horizon International.

NHI starts and finishes with the gospel. The gospel is the reason and purpose.

We are in the beginning days of developing New Horizon International. But in these early days, New Horizon International has already birth New Horizon Home. New Horizon Home is a children’s home for girls. Currently NHH has 60 girls. These girls are of those in Haiti who are at great risk. They have been abandoned or rescued from the early days of slavery and child trafficking.

NewHorizonHome

Eastside Baptist Church in Twin Falls, Idaho has responded to the invitation from the Lord to partner with New Horizon International in obligations of rent, food, education, healthcare, and spiritual needs of these 60 girls. We are pleased to know that God who has invited us to join Him in this gospel work will provide all that is needed. May the Lord be pleased to find a man in Port-au-Prince, Haiti willing to obey Him. May the Lord be pleased to awaken 60 girls at New Horizon Home  willing to trust Him. May the Lord be pleased to find a people in Twin Falls, Idaho willing to join Him in global gospel work. May the Lord be pleased as we all find our joy in Him.
