The Law Demands an Answer

Following is the preaching text (not narrative text) of my Christmas Eve service, December 24, 2019. Most of my sermons are hand written. But my tradition at Christmas is a typed bullet point text. Rarely do I write manuscript text of sermons.

Merry Christmas!

The Christmas story answers the law – The death, burial, resurrection crushes the enemy, death.

The Law demands a payment.

The payment is death of a worthy sacrifice

  • This worthy sacrifice must be blameless from beginning to end.
  • This worthy sacrifice must not be guilty of trespass against the Law, ultimately the Law Giver.
  • Because the payment for this sin requires death of the worthy sacrifice it becomes necessary for the sacrifice to be human.
  • God is altogether different than human, thus it would be fitting for God to put on human flesh to be the qualified, worthy sacrifice. Not just that Christ must take upon him a created nature, but that he should take upon him our nature. Not the nature of an angel, not the nature of an animal, but the nature of man.
  • This is God’s way, not God’s problem he is required to fix.
    • Man broke the law of God – it is required of man to pay the penalty for breaking the law. God told man to “not eat of the tree.” This was a command to man, man is guilty.
    • Man was told he would surely die. Not another thing, but “he” – mankind.
    • The same place (temporal day with time/space/motion) that man broke the law would require man to satisfy the demand of the law.
  • The only solution was God’s doing… INCARNATION
    • He would be born from the womb of the human race. Making him truly, the Son of Man. Like Adam, the uncreated God put on created flesh. Not the way of natural conception, but rather by the Power of the Holy Spirit.
    • Christ was formed in the womb of an actual virgin. Not of a fallen man. Not by physical intercourse (God is spirit and must be worshiped in spirit and truth).
  • His birth, though conceived supernaturally, was of a common, simple way. Not of royalty of men, but in a manger in Bethlehem as foretold by God so that when it happened men might know it was God.
  • His birth was “in the fullness of time”. This is similar to how Isaiah tells God’s people that he is unlike the worthless idols of the imaginations of men who cannot tell of things before they happen.
    • It was the complete, proper, right time.
      • Why not before the flood? most of the cursed were not yet even back to dust
      • Why not before Moses? Man’s mortality had not fully been known. Sin was well known but the mortality of man was confused.
      • Why not before the formation of the nation of Israel?
      • Why not before the prophets?
      • Why not during the Babylonian era, the Medo/Persian era, the Greacian era?
      • Why after a long stretch of silence and during the Roman era?
      • What qualifies that as the “proper time”?
  • The Incarnation of Christ came during the worlds greatest, most powerful display of what sinful man could accomplish. And in doing so with no awareness of the creator.
  • Greater than the act of creation is the incarnation of Christ in the promised city, of a virgin, under the rule of the most powerful nation the world would ever know.
  • Amos 9:11 “In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches, and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old.”
  • Malachi 4 the announcement of John the Baptist (the last O.T. prophet) after centuries of silence.
  • The angelic visitation to the shepherds at the timely place, more than at any other time, more than at creation, the angels shout only when the uncreated Christ is incarnated to finish the work of redemption.

Now, Go! The time since the incarnation (including the death, burial, resurrection) is our appointed day. In this time, it is fitting that those whom God has saved from His judgment must be the most active of all time in the missionary cause of the advancement of the Gospel. We are given a command from a military field general, go! Take the field!

The enemy of the Messiah has launched a full front attack. He began with babies. He’s so pathetic in his arrogance that he gives no regard to babies. This strategy is still employed. This has confused the powerful. This causes the foolish to think themselves wise. This numbs the masses. Rise up in our day o church, rise up and shout for joy in Christ.

You deserve hell, Christ secures heaven.

You deserve death, Christ gives life.

You deserve the wrath of God, Christ gives you sonship, with full inheritance.

2020 Legislature

In August we invited Scott Herndon to come to Twin Falls, to help citizens understand the Abortion Human Rights Act and how we can be engaged. It is time to act on the things we’ve been praying about.

The Idaho Legislature will be in session within a few weeks.

The Idaho Abortion Human Rights Act (AHRA) bill is ready to be introduced to legislators as soon as they return to Boise in January, 2020. It is by the grace of God that the bill now has a total of 5 sponsors/co-sponsors (Rep. Heather Scott, Rep. John Green, Rep. Christy Zito, Rep. Priscilla Giddings, and Rep. Tony Wisnieski).

Call to action: Consider contacting your representatives/senator to encourage them to support AHRA. Included in this post are names and emails of representatives in the Twin Falls region. Remember we function in a representative republic; meaning, we elect people to speak for us. Those we elected need to hear from ‘we the people’.

(A sample letter is copied at the end of this post.)

This information is for anyone in districts 23, 24, and 25. (For information on other districts see this PAGE.)

Dear (insert name) Rep. Lance Clow,

My name is Paul Thompson, I’m a resident in district 24 in the city of Twin Falls. I want to let you know that I am pleased to pray for you often and especially now as the start of the new legislative session is just a few weeks away.

I hope you will take the time to be informed of the Abortion Human Rights Act bill that will be introduced by Rep. Heather Scott, Rep. John Green, Rep. Christy Zito, Rep. Priscilla Giddings, and Rep. Tony Wisnieski and even consider becoming a co-sponsor before the bill is introduced.

Here is a link for the bill as it will be introduced.

There are babies being murdered in the city of Twin Falls. You can speak for these neighbors today. Please know that I’m praying for you to speak with boldness on this matter in the 2020 session.

I’m pleased to pray for you and the many responsibilities you have.

For the Glory of God,

The Apostle Paul’s Office

In a recent trip to Italy with Renee, we had the opportunity to visit the Mamertino Prison. It is the reported location of the Roman imprisonment of the Apostles Paul and Peter (at different times).

There is nothing biblically critical if it is or not the actual location. I’m sure it at least represents the conditions of an ancient prison cell. Today, a Roman Catholic church has been built on top of the prison to memorialize Paul’s and Peter’s prison time. There was the typical propaganda, money to be made, and improper emphasis of the location. The cell has obviously been prepared for presentation and protected from vandalism. For this, I’m thankful.

To be in an ancient location such as was of significant interest to me.

Be sure of this, there were no lines to wait in. There were no other “tourist” pushing their way through, no one taking selfies. It was a quiet place, at least while we were there.

The cell sits about two floors under ground level, it would have been very dark. There had not been any rain while we were in Rome but the cell was damp.

The bottom level would be the prison cell
Lower level prison cell. Top level would connect to other cells.

Access to the lower level would have been through a hole in the ceiling, like a manhole.

To see such a place as this puts the prison writings of Paul into perspective.

“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:3-6 NASB)

And then for the gospel preacher to the gentiles to acknowledge that to endure such temporal suffering was seen as such in light of the gospel.

“For it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me.” (Philippians 1:7 NASB)

Saved by “Grace Alone!” for the glory of God, alone.

Ugh and Neurotic

I first began writing a regular column for local newspapers when I pastored in Fairfield, ID. I wrote a weekly column in the Camas Courier for nearly three years. Camas county has a total population of just over 1,000 people, so the reader base was quite small. This was before the day of the internet. If someone wanted to disagree with me they had to write me a letter or talk to me personally.

Today I write a regular column in the Twin Falls Times News with a much larger readership potential. The Magic Valley has a growing population reaching above 100,000 people with Twin Falls, being the largest city. I count this a kindness of God to have this opportunity. I strive to speak boldly on cultural issues with an aim at the gospel always.

Here, if someone disagrees with me they don’t have to write me personally and they can hide behind alias names to say what they think thanks to the advent of the internet. Over the past nine years of writing I feel like I have come to know two people in the community very well. The problem is I would never recognize them in public because they are able to hide their identity. Both reply frequently to my column contributions at various degrees of disagreement and an occasional agreement or defense.

It is my lot in the age of the internet to have a growing affinity with two nebulous acquaintances with people with names more attached to a time like I publish a column to a people before paper was invented.

I’m regularly attacked by a guy named Ugh and occasionally defended by a guy named Neurotic. (I’m not making this up.)

Here is the latest small exchange between Ugh and Neurotic. I chuckle a bit on the inside knowing these are the names of two people I have a regular exchange of intellectual public discourse with. (insert a tone of slight sarcasm at this point.)

“Your message was great until this…’ This week, the nation will stop most everything. It may be true that on the national holiday of Thanksgiving many will observe it as an unholy sabbath as they champion and promote self, but to the ones whom God has turned away his anger, there will be but one thing upon their lips: thanksgiving.’. You’re kind of full of hate for anyone who doesn’t believe the way you do. It’s a shame. “

Tasty Chicken is No Savior

On Monday, news outlets began to repeat an announcement that the philanthropy arm of Chick-fil-A (CFA) would be making some changes in how they will give to organizations in the future.

Here are a few of my observations.

  • It is the responsibility that God gives to those who have money to do as they wish. God blesses and God holds them accountable.
  • There are no better waffle fries these temporal lips of mine have ever tasted.
  • I have nothing to say about where someone invests their money. I’m not a socialist Marxists.
  • There is no other fast food restaurant I visit that knows me by name (other than Sonic).
  • Where I’m thankful for the historic bold position that owners of CFA have taken on biblical standards, I’ve never experienced or heard of a CFA deny service to anyone regardless of what they believe or how they live.
  • Best lemonade anywhere, hands down.
  • I have learned from personal experience that the media is a poor source to get truth in relationship to issue driven agendas. When the media reports facts it is helpful, when the media reports issues it does so from a biased position. Primary resources are always best. Here is how CFA reports how and where they generously give their money… Chick-fil-A Foundation
  • I will never forget when my local CFA learned of the death of a man in our church. When they learned this man died at work CFA paid for meals for the entire work force that day. The local owner/operator learned of a family with a broken vehicle and stranded in Twin Falls once and when he learned they were a family from a Baptist church he called me and we were able to help them with other needs. This local experience I’ve had with CFA is told thousands of times in every city there is a CFA. No community with a CFA will regret having one.
  • The moment the church of the living God looks to the chicken sandwich to speak for them is a day when the church will be at a low place. The good news; God appointed His church to go into all the world and preach the Gospel. His church may stop for a chicken sandwich from time to time.
  • Where I’m always pleased to hear of how a Christian business owner will refuse to be directed by the culture I will not get my biblical boldness from a dyslexic cartoon cow.
  • May God bless His holy name whenever and wherever he wants.
  • I just received an email that a free milkshake has been added to my Chick-fil-A phone app.

Pastors’ Round Table

Every Thursday from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. On Newsradio 1310 KLIX I am pleased for the opportunity to be on-air with pastors Bear Morton of Magic Valley Bible Curch and Christopher Folkerts of New Covenant United Reformed Church. The host of Magic Valley this Morning, Bill Colley, is gracious, a great American, fair, and a skilled conversationalist.

Join us on Thursday as we give Biblical consideration to real issues.

This week we will think out loud on issues private universities are facing and will continue to face in light of the collapsing morality of the culture and what this means for Christians as the growing secular influence attempts to squeeze the Bible believing Christian into its mould.

Biblically Qualified Masculine Preachers

The ancient language of the bible is clear that the Creator of the universe has appointed that the voice of the local church is to be masculine, and that biblically qualified masculine.

This does not mean that churches are not compassionate, caring, emotional, or understanding, it is to mean that the church of the Living God is to be lead by, biblically qualified, men; not women, not women who identify as men, not men confused about God.

There is a rise of popularity in this western day that wants to soften the office of the pastor of the Lord’s church. This is not just something that is growing in popularity among the charismatics, this is growing in popularity among Baptists, and among the historic conservative Southern Baptists, my kinsmen.

From this side of what is showing itself to be a line in the sand. It’s one thing for the president of the United States to (foolishly) appoint Paula White as a spiritual adviser or pastoral voice, it is another thing for the J.D. Greear, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, and Russel Moore, president of the Ethics Religious Liberty Commission, endorse Beth Moore who continues to question the sufficiency of Scripture in matters to life and holiness.

Where there may have been a day when Beth Moore’s teaching was welcome and sought after as a good resource for women’s ministry bible studies in this church, I have not endorsed Beth Moore’s resources for several years and will continue to express concern to all women in this church who want to use her resources.

I stand in agreement with recent concerns expressed by Tom Ascol, Jeff Noblit, John McArthur and Phil Johnson.

For me, this is a serious day for Southern Baptists. This is as serious of a day as the day when our fathers fought the fight to reclaim our denomination to the inerrancy of Scripture. The fight today is for the sufficiency of Scripture.

“The horse is out of the barn.” John McArthur
