An Open Letter to Everyone Who Gave to New Horizon Home Last Year

Dear generous friends,

I have just returned from a visit at New Horizon Home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and I wanted to express appreciation to each of you who are so kind to give toward the ministry of Eastside Baptist Church and one of her international ministry outposts.

Your one time or ongoing contributions are carefully distributed and gratefully appreciated by Eastside Baptist Church and 33 girls at New Horizon Home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

You have been kind to give, you have been quick to respond, you are partners in an eternal weight of gospel work among these beautiful girls. For this I say “thank you.”

Enjoy some pictures of the new home, the faithful workers and the life-long impact you are making on these 33 girls. Thank you and may the Lord be blessed as you respond to his call upon your life.

For the Glory to God Alone!

An Open Letter to the Church at Quail Creek

Dear pastor Kyle Clayton and the Lord’s church at Quail  Creek, Amarillo, TX,

This past week I had the opportunity to travel to Port-au-Prince, Haiti with one of you, Frank DeRight. I’ve known Frank all of my life but not until this past week have I ever traveled overseas on a ministry/mission trip with him.

I want to just take a short moment to tell you that I found Frank to be as helpful in the good Gospel work as I expected he would be. I believe you would be and are proud of his eagerness to be on-mission.

He came prepared and willing to do all that was needed and expected. His courage to travel to Port-au-Prince alone and wait for the rest of the ministry team to arrive from Idaho was of the kind of courage you would expect of a Joshua or a Gideon.

You sent him with sufficient supplies for our girls’ home (New Horizon Home). You sent the kind of man needed for the day. You sent one prepared with the gospel banner on his shoulder and not hidden in his back pocket.

He was kind to our children, generous with kindness and willing to do anything needed. He offered good advice on the assessment of our new home. But most of all he understands the gospel and has the capacity to speak of this hope he has in Christ to all he came across; young, old, male, female, English-speaking or Haitian-Creole (with the aid of a translator.) You sent us a giant of a man in the faith.

Thank you for not sending a humanitarian or one seeking selfish vainglory. You sent a brother prepared in all ways.

I’ve attached a few pictures I thought you might enjoy. Many of you helped by sending Frank with needed supplies and resources May the Lord bless your kindness.

We thank God for all of you, for the glory of God alone.

Because they are Necessary, Use Words

This past week I’ve been back at New Horizon Home with our 33 girls. By the grace of God, I traveled with 7 other people from Twin Falls, and Boise, Idaho and Amarillo, Texas.

Jesus warns that once a follower puts his hand to the plow he must keep his eyes on the prize, not looking back with regret or doubt (“No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62). Oh that God would find us fit for harvest work.

In addition to taking supplies to teach the girls to knit and weave, clothing, school supplies, medical supplies and nutritional items; we both took printed word (New Testament in Haitian Creole)  and spoke of the Gospel multiple times a day.

Following are a few pictures of the sojourners using words to speak of the glory of God and the necessary proclamation of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Today at New Horizon Home

Today, because God moved His people to kindness, the girls at New Horizon Home are well fed with nutritious food. The girls are growing stronger every day. They are cared for by loving women who work hard. The home is directed by the good administration of Alex Veilliard. May the news of God’s care reach far and wide. May the Lord’s church be encouraged. May His name be declared great among the nations.

Update on New Horizon Home

By the grace of God and for the glory of His name I’m pleased to give you a short update of how God continues to turn ashes to beauty.  It happens like this multiple times every month. We pray, asking God to supply all that is needed for New Horizon Home in Port-au-Prince and within days, moments, or even before we are done praying, God sends a messenger (usually the mail man) with news of provision. Last month alone, the Lord spoke to His people from Kansas, Texas, Idaho, and Utah. They heard the Lord’s leading in their life and their response was born from the very nature and character of the Lord Himself, with generosity and compassion.

Since moving into the new home the girls continue to grow healthy and strong. We now have more girls than ever before and the need for food, clothing and care increases. Because God knows of our needs before we even know to ask, he makes the need known to people near and far.

The new home still has needs and God kindly provides. Until last month the girls have all been sharing the same bathroom, we now have three toilets for the girls. This is a blessing that could easily be overlooked unless you were next in line. Bless the Lord, bless the Lord!

It is hard to put into words the gratitude I have toward the Lord. He hears our prayer, He moves the hearts of people, and my only reaction is of splendid joy and praise to the Lord. His outstretched arm is never too short. His love endures forever.

Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. (Psalms 118:5 ESV)

All Things?

Last week Tetona Dunlap from the Times News came by and interviewed me and then later ran this front page article, Following Ordeal , A Refuge for Haitian Girls is Created.  I’ll be the first to tell you that where we are today is not where we thought we would be four years ago. Our aim was too short sighted. Our purpose was narrow in perspective. But following the ordeal, God has done for His glory. The pleasure for me is not in where we are, but rather what God still has in store for His glory and our joy in Him.

In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.  And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. (Romans 8:26-30 NASB)

I’ll probably learn from this for the rest of my life, the value of reflecting on those days is how God provided. Not to reflect on how hard those days were, but how good God was.

It took me time to put my pride aside. I wanted at first to clarify to people what happened so that people wouldn’t look at me the way the media portrait had painted me. I still find this urge to defend what happened as a gross injustice. But listen, to realize that what God was doing, and still is doing, and always will be doing, has been the most liberating reality in better understanding the nature of God. God is at liberty to cause discomfort in my life  for his glory. God is even fair to walk me through a dark valley for his glory. And His doing this for His sake is for my good.
