SBC LIFE

Today the Baptist Press article that ran at Baptist Press last month was in print at SBCLIFE, a journal of the Southern Baptist Convention on page 16.

Here is a link to the SBCLIFE article. With some additional information from the Southern Baptist Executive Committee.

The part of greatest joy for me in this is that for the past 12 months God has been using Eastside Baptist Church to be involved in something bigger than we could imagine. New Horizon Home, a ministry of Eastside Baptist Church, is moving our 20 girls into a new home this weekend and preparing to receive 10 more girls in need of a home.

Where it is a pleasure to look back and see the kind hand of God  in a difficult season of life, I can’t stop blessing the Lord for His ongoing kindness to use this church in Idaho to provide food, housing, care, spiritual teaching and education to our daughters in Haiti.

New Horizon Home; the First Year

It was just twelve months ago that Eastside Baptist Church began the early steps of the establishment of New Horizon Home. Over the next few days, I’ll share some of the early stories and pictures.

I’ll start here with our visit this time last year.

Left to Right: Steve, Mr. Wilson Touze, Paul

When Steve McMullin and I arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti we met the landlord of the home we would soon begin renting from, Mr. Touze. Mr. Touze met us at the airport with Alex, our director. We quickly discovered the willingness of Mr. Touze to help us.

His driver, Ronnie, would escort us through the city to buy beds and food. Mr. Touze’s friend met us one night to build a kitchen table for the girls. Mr. Touze was willing to let us use his internet connection and computer to Skype Alex regularly in those early establishing days.

Soon after the starting of the home would be the start of our school, New Horizon School. Then eventually the first worship gathering of New Horizon Baptist Church.

We will always bless the Lord for the friendship and kindness of Mr. Touze.

Now Unto Him Who is Able

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21 NASB)

Dear Alex my dearly beloved brother in Christ,

We (Eastside Baptist Church in Twin Falls, Idaho) greet you this evening in the powerful name of Jesus the Christ! Please greet your wife and children, please give my love to your father and mother. I want for you to speak to the sisters who faithfully tend to the work of the Lord at New Horizon Home. Please, make sure they know that Renee and I love them. Please inform them that Eastside Baptist Church is pleased with their labor as though they are caring for our own daughters.

It is with joy in the Lord, that I inform you that God has answered our need and has made the way for you to begin moving the girls, the beautiful girls, to their new house.

As you know, we are only able to do what God provides. His word declares He is able. It declares that not only is He able, but He is able to do. It declares that not only is He able to do, but that He is able to do far more. It not only declares that He is able to do far more, but it declares that He is able to do far more abundantly. It not only declares that He is able to do far more abundantly, but He is able to do fare more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, and that, according to the power that works within us. Yes! to Him only be the glory in the church today and in Christ Jesus to all generations and nations of the world. May we declare His mighty name.

Tonight (May 2, 2014) a people belonging to God, who associate themselves together for the glory of the Lord and the advancement of His gospel, known as Southern Baptist; churches of the Magic Valley Baptist Association have generously obeyed their Lord, Jesus the Christ, and have given $5,000.00 US dollars for the first year lease for the new home for our girls.

Please tell the girls of the mighty hand of God. Please tell them of His provision for them for His glory. May the favor of the Lord rest upon their souls. May we all delight in God.

Be sure when you pay for the first year lease that you inform the owner of the Lord’s kindness today. Make sure that all praise is given to our Lord! Jesus the Christ, the son of the Living God!

I greet you in the name of the Lord, Jesus the Christ! The name of the Lord is a strong tower and those who run to Him will be saved. Run! run to the Lord. Amen!

A New House for New Horizon Home

It is hard to believe, at times, that just one year ago Eastside Baptist Church began her first overseas ministry post. We have surely been partnered with others who do similar work around the world. We have without a doubt been to many places in the past decade. But New Horizon International was first birthed from the painful experience God walked this faithful body of believers through over four years ago. For the past 12 months God has provided beyond what we could ask or imagine. There are 20 beautiful girls who trust God to provide for their needs at New Horizon Home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

We have paid a month-to-month rent to Mr. Touze, our landlord, for the past  12 months. He’s been very kind and generous. We pray that God will bless him and his ongoing business adventures.

The Lord’s people at Eastside Baptist Church have been faithfully following the Lord in this God sized ministry.

Late last week our director at New Horizon Home, Alex, signed paper work to begin taking possession of a permanent address. A place the girls will call home, God willing, as they grow in favor with Him. New Horizon Home will pay $5,000.00 per year for the coming 10 years for our new house. May the Lord show his faithfulness and glory with as much joy as he has these past 12 months. May his favor rest upon this home.

Here are a few photos of our new home. We are aiming at May 10, 2014 as our moving in day. There are a few mild repairs to be done and a lot of dusting and cleaning. But before long… this house will become home to our girls.

Bread Alone?

Yes, man does not live on bread alone. Recently, at New Horizon Home, God has provided bread (and more) for 20 special girls in my life. But the pressing desire is that “every word” that proceeds from the mouth of God will sufficiently meet every need.

Here are some recent pictures. Rejoice in the Lord always. Yes, Always!

Encouragement Came Like This Today

As Eastside Baptist in Twin Falls, Idaho continues to ask God for help in the ongoing work in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, we find that our dependence upon the Lord increases as we pray. February marks the tenth month of obeying the Lord to fully support a church plant, a home for abandoned, orphaned, and neglected girls, and a school to educate the girls. I am thankful to the Lord for a believing people who will trust the Lord. This is not easy. It is not natural to the natural man to do when he doesn’t see.

I post today, to encourage the Lord’s people who pray. We do not ask for financial help from anyone or anywhere to fund what God has called us to do. Yet God is pleased to prompt His people from many places to encourage. Renee and I will depart soon for another trip to Haiti. We will be blessed to see the girls and the faithful caregivers at New Horizon Home.

GiftsFromGodLast week, before we were aware of the need, God prompted two people from different parts of the United States to send Eastside Baptist Church money for New Horizon Home. Today, after praying this morning for what appeared to be a financially tight month for funds the mail man delivered two envelopes with provision enough and encouragement to press on.

To the Lord’s people, be encouraged…

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the defense of my life;
Whom shall I dread? 2 When evildoers came upon me to devour my flesh,
My adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell. 3 Though a host encamp against me,
My heart will not fear;
Though war arise against me,
In spite of this I shall be confident.
Psalms 27:1-3 (NASB)

A Report of God’s Faithfulness

Today, I post for the purpose to encourage the Lord’s people.

As I approach the anniversary date of a most spectacular season in my life four years ago. I want to show you evidence of the Lord’s provision of a work he began during a most unsuspecting encounter with danger.

No one would have planned our gospel engagement in Haiti the way God did. We would have planned it in a way that would have been comfortable, easy and I’m sure would have appeased the worldly man. Then we would have mapped out a financial plan that would likely not include much faith at all.

For the past several years I have been invited to speak in various places about those God ordained days. Now, by the leading of God, Eastside Baptist Church, a simple church by the world’s standard, has begun a journey of faith that was never expected by us when we said yes to the invitation to go. In 2013, the Lord called Eastside Baptist to plant a church, open a girls home, and partner with other gospel driven people as we put our hand to the plow of sowing the fields of the souls of men (in this case 20 girls in Port-au-Prince and a neighborhood with no gathering for believers) with the gospel.

In 2013, Eastside Baptist Church asked God to help us. This people, known to few, believed God calling them to plant a church and establish a girls home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This, in spite of tight financial restraints.  There were a few months when our regular operating budget would fall short, a month where payroll was delayed for 5 days, and a deadline to the city of Twin Falls with more of our building project was met as we continued to build debt free.

Our first step was to ask God for help… Even with a tight, and sometimes short financial budget, we adjusted our budget in mid year to include $200.00 a month to give to the church planting work and girls home.

Our next step was to ask God for help… We knew that $200.00 was not enough to cover all of the needed expenses. We Asked God to provide $1,225.00 per month from outside of our budget to start the work. We committed to not ask anyone for help but God. In doing so, God has given us many opportunities to talk about His work as people and churches call and write for more information. We are always pleased to speak of God’s work. Toward the end of our first month, we were $90 short of the needed $1,225.00. With one day left in the month, tempted to ask and spread the word to men, I closed my office door in fear that I had not heard properly from the Lord. As I wept and cried out to God for help, the church treasurer came to the office to prepare the check, she checked the money box in the office and there was a check for New Horizon Home for $100.00. The Lord had already prepared and answered our need. My faith has been increased.

Our next step was to ask God for help… The discovery of medical needs for the girls began to become evident as some were diagnosed with tuberculosis, dental needs for their failing teeth, nourishment for their fragile bodies from neglect and endangerment began to surface. These were no surprise to God, but not part of our financial plan. Even though it was established in faith, it was evident that our faith was still too small. As we asked God for more and above each month, he always provided.

Our next step was to ask God for help… In October, after returning from Haiti, we found that we were still needing to include more toward the growing needs. Now the questions of education and ongoing care for the girls would require us to once again increase our faith and establish a budget of $2,250.00 per month. Keep in mind that our operating budget within our church was still only $200.00. (We couldn’t even afford the $200.00 per month without God.) The temptation was high to send letters to churches and people we know asking for help. But we remained steadfast by the power of God to plead our case before the Almighty. So we asked God for help…

Our next step is to ask God for help… Since beginning in April with $200.00, to $1,225.000, to $2,250.00 per month, God has met ALL needs.

It’s a good thing that IRS requires churches to give financial receipts to people who give to churches. But for me, the most exciting part about addressing and stamping letters to those who have given to Eastside Baptist Church and New Horizon Home is a visual reminder of the kindness of God as I prepare to walk to the mail box.

My next steps this morning will be steps of joy and praise as these letters are actually to people who are not members/attenders of Eastside Baptist Church. They are going to individuals and churches in Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, and Idaho. They are people who have given one time or multiple times. They are people who respond to the prompting of God. This picture is a sacred picture. It represents, to me and the people of Eastside, a gracious God who moves an obedient people to do His glorious work. May the Lord be pleased, His church rejoice, the Gospel go forth, and His name be praised.

We follow God to the uttermost… Oh Lord, we believe! Now as we take the next step, help our unbelief.

Master Chef, Madam Jizlesn

the Cook Madam Jizlesn

There is a lot to say about a piece of art.

Silas Thompson Fine Art has just released a new 6×8 of Madam Jizlesn. The story of this master piece is a story of compassion. It is a story of suffering. It is a story of provision. It is a story of care. (like Silas Thompson Fine Art on Facebook)

But this kind of story doesn’t happen without pain and suffering from both the subject and the artist. Madam Jizlesn, is the master chef of New Horizon Home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She provides tasty, nutritious meals every day for 20 precious girls whose stories are also birthed in pain and suffering.

Madam Jizlesn doesn’t prepare meals in a controlled environment with ease of an electric or gas range. She prepares meals every day on the west side of the house in 90+ degree days on a charcoal burner. It is a pleasure to watch this master chef prepare the staples of life. The result of her labor? Satisfaction and increased health for 20 girls abandoned in a forgotten land.

Silas Thompson, a young man who follows his Lord at risk to life and/or reputation to obey his Maker’s demand. Not long ago this young follower of Christ left a controlled environment and ease of life and quickly found himself in the throws of a spiritual conundrum as the world watched and jeered.

This painting, like any good painting, will generate emotion, feeling, thought, and consideration for the observer, the subject, the owner and the painter. Maybe they will all think different things, but for this observer who knows the subject and painter, I call it a master piece.

Philippians 3:7-11
Yet every advantage that I had gained I considered lost for Christ’s sake. Yes, and I look upon everything as loss compared with the overwhelming gain of knowing Jesus Christ my Lord. For his sake I did in actual fact suffer the loss of everything, but I considered it useless rubbish compared with being able to win Christ. For now my place is in him, and I am not dependent upon any of the self-achieved righteousness of the Law. God has given me that genuine righteousness which comes from faith in Christ. How changed are my ambitions! Now I long to know Christ and the power shown by his resurrection: now I long to share his sufferings, even to die as he died, so that I may perhaps attain as he did, the resurrection from the dead.
