For the Furtherance of the Gospel

God sovereignly and supernaturally supervises all seasons of suffering in our lives for His glory for the furtherance of the Gospel and the encouragement of other believers.

Join me on September 26, 2014 at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship in Twin Falls, Idaho at noon as churches gather together to pray for pastor Saeed and the persecuted church. May the Gospel go forth.

“…that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else,  and that most of the brethren , trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment , have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.” (Phil 1:13-14 NASB)

“Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in Sheol , behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
Even there Your hand will lead me,
And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me,
And the light around me will be night,”
Even the darkness is not dark to You,
And the night is as bright as the day.
Darkness and light are alike to You.”
(Psalm 139:7-12 NASB)

the God of Sports

It’s that time of year again, “Sundays become optional” for some and the Lord of the sport becomes ruler of the Lord’s Day. This will be interpreted as legalism by some and misunderstood by others that enjoying a sport is somehow considered wrong. It’s not wrong or sinful. It’s not a legalistic position that a person can’t enjoy an afternoon nap.. I mean game. It’s one thing for us to participate or enjoy a game. It’s of another discussion when Sundays become optional during a season, series or particular game.

Determine for yourself this day who the Lord of the Lord’s day is; if you choose the Lord, you won’t be disappointed if you choose to gather with the Lord’s people while you miss the “game of the year.”

A Castle or Church

A man’s home is his castle… or so goes the saying. But is this a healthy way for a follower of Christ to think of his home? I’ve been reading biographical sketches of Richard Baxter this week and struck by his labor for the good of Kidderminster, the town he pastored. He regarded worship, biblical instruction, and discipline in the home as essential to the health of society.

This puts a work on the home as more a training ground for the children God places here.

The idea of a castle is more about luxury and easy. The idea of a church is more complex and intentional. Richard Baxter preached to his church to “keep up the government of God in your families; holy families must be the chief preservers of the interest of religion in the world. This puts an importance of raising a family at a whole other level. It is more as much a calling as any calling there is.

“Let your own example teach your children that holiness and heavenliness and blamelessness of tongue and life, which you desire them to learn and practice. The example of parents is most powerful with children, both for good and evil… they will sooner believe your bad lives than your good words.” Richard Baxter

Baxter treated the congregation like a family; a family of families. The good work of gathering a family with other believers was to never be missed except for extreme circumstances.

The good in society that many pine for of old is not found in a moral government; it’s a Christian home, behaving godly, that impacts society as they gather together with others aiming at the same thing, the favor of God.

Hey men, today would be a great day to gather your family together. Read, pray, give instruction and lead your family on a more difficult path than establishing your rule in your castle. Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord while it is still called today and lead with courage, shepherd the flock before you. Then, let only the extreme circumstance keep you from gathering with the family of God this coming Lord’s Day.

A Plan for Gathering With the Church this Weekend

Earlier today I posted 5 Easy Steps to Avoid Gathering with the Church this Weekend. Hopefully you picked up on the satire and won’t follow those 5 easy steps. Now I want to offer a better plan for you. One that I believe will actually be a blessing to you and not a curse.

In the home I grew up in it was never a question of gathering with the church. It was the plan as we left on Sunday night that we would gather on Wednesday to pray together and then again the coming Lord’s Day, unless hindered by an act of God (and that rarely, and I mean rarely, happened). One of the best things you can do for yourself and your family is to establish an atmosphere that this household gathers with other households as often as possible to pray, study the bible and worship together.

Weekly At Eastside Baptist, we try to help you with ideas on how to do this with information in the bulletin. A bulletin you say? You know, that piece of paper you are handed by the ushers every Sunday. Yes, that weekly publication filled with typos and grossly misspelled words. It can be much more than a mindless document that you don’t give much attention to. There are things in it that will help you plan to gather with the Lord’s people.

  • Schedule of opportunities to gather with believers
    • Sunday mornings: 9:15AM Bible Study, 10:30AM worship gathering
    • Sunday afternoon/evening: This is different most weeks so notice the location and times (for example, this week we will gather at 5PM in Rogerson, Idaho with our extended church family for pot-luck and fellowship)
    • Wednesday evening: 6:30PM every week we gather for prayer.
  • Scripture Memory: The bulletin has information about suggested Scripture that many are working on memorizing.
  • Catechism Question: Every week there is a new question with answer with biblical prof. Right now we are working on examining the Ten Commandments.
  • Sermon Notes: The bulletin offers a place to write down observations about the sermon. This will help you recall what was taught on the previous week and help you in preparing for the coming week. I generally preach chapter to chapter, verse to verse. This make it rather easy to know what will be examined the coming Lord’s Day. These sermon notes may help generate discussion with your family throughout the week.
  • Other opportunities are promoted in the bulletin that you may want to consider as supplemental to your weekly preparation for gathering with the church on purpose.
  • The monthly prayer guide and calendar can help you stay connected with the entire church family, pick one up this week when you gather with the saints.

May the Lord bless your efforts as you plan and plan on gathering with the believers this week.

Arise, Church!

It is a good day to be the church.

It is my argument that it is always a good day to be the church. Earlier this week ChristianAudio announced their free audio book download for the month of March would be “The Normal Christian Life” by Watchman Nee. Where there may be some controversy surrounding his life and especially what became of his teaching when he died in the early 70s, there is no doubt that there is value to the church today. I highly recommend this book to you for consideration.

My intent is not to write about this book, my intent is to speak about this good day for the church and to borrow Nee’s title of this classic book The Normal Christian Life for a moment. I promise to give it back, but it is a good title for consideration.

The normal Christian life is (should be) radically different than the normal American life.

The normal American’s life is expected to be a life of relative ease and marked with a type of common blessedness in comparison to the overwhelming majority of the rest of the world. Over the past couple of centuries, Christians have grown to love this ease of life and have forgotten that the Bible speaks of a normal life that is a marker of true believers.

I fear this is because we have lost the preaching of the Gospel in our land. The Gospel, the biblical Gospel is counter to the secular norm. This secular norm is attractive to the carnal man because it affords him ease of life and the pursuit of pleasure in temporary life and no craving is given to the carnal man for eternal matters.

The carnal man longs for the matters of this world and they are never satisfied until satisfied. He rules his life based on what he is born for. He argues that those who stop him or speak against him are attempting to keep him from being who he was born to be. Demanding, even though he wouldn’t admit that he is like this, that his (created) god would not make him with these cravings unless he meant for him to be satisfied in them.

“for natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised .” (1 Cor 2:14 NASB)

The spiritual man, on the other hand, has been regenerated.

How does a carnal man become a spiritual man? He must be regenerated. He must be born again. In other words, his carnal (old man) must be put to death. Then, he must be given a spiritual nature (new man) that has been made new.

We hear far too often of persons being brought into the kingdom of heaven without being “put to death”. As Charles Spurgeon puts it,

“we hear of persons being healed before they have been wounded, and brought into a certainty of justification without ever having lamented their condemnation, we are very dubious as to the value of such healings and justifyings. This style of things is not according to the truth. God never clothes men until He has first stripped them, nor does He quicken them by the gospel till first they are slain by the law. When you meet with persons in whom there is no trace of conviction of sin, you may be quite sure that they have not been wrought upon by the Holy Spirit.” (the Soul Winner, p.13)

We need gospel preaching, not simply preaching about the gospel.

Too often, the preaching about the gospel leads to emotionalism. Story’s that move even the carnal man, because emotionalism usually touches the temporary. It touches and moves a man, but it doesn’t generate new birth. He’s been part of something that his carnal nature understands and he compartmentalizes the experience as common to all people. But when the doctrines of the gospel is preached or shared, the carnal man is confronted with his offense to God that must be dealt with. Either he must reconcile this offence on his own merit and face the wrath of God without the blood covering of Christ or he must be put to death first, then regenerated by the work of the Holy Spirit and covered by the blood covering of Christ and live.

There will always be true Gospel preaching, may there be an increase of Gospel preaching today. Preacher, look to your bible. Our duty is not to excite the carnal man, our duty is to preach a gospel that first offends, then rescues. We are not called to produce hypocrites. We are called to take this gospel to the nations.

“To make proselytes, is a suitable labor for Pharisees: to beget men unto God, is the honorable aim of ministers of Christ… To introduce unconverted persons to the church, is to weaken and degrade the church; and therefore an apparent gain may be a real loss. (the Soul Winner, p.5)

Arise! preacher, to your post! You and I must continue to aim at men whose hearts are not yet broken of their love for the things of this world and then we must keep on preaching Christ crucified until they are rescued from the sure condemned condition.

“A far greater work must be done before a man is saved.” He must see his condition without Christ. This work is only done with gospel proclamation.

The ‘normal Christian’ sticks to the Gospel. The ‘normal Christian’ is hated by the unregenerate. The normal Christian sticks to the Gospel.
