Men, when your family wakes up on Sunday, do they ask you,  “Are we going to church?” or do they arise saying to themselves, “this is what we do and this is where we go.” If they are asking you, “do we have to go to church today?” or “are we going to church today?” then you are teaching them that God and his people are not important. They will likely grow up with less interest in the things of God than you. This would be a tragic legacy to leave them.

Gather your family together tonight and make plans to gather with the saints on this coming Lord’s Day.

Haiti Revisited

Moses met with the Lord on the far side of the desert (Exodus 3:1). There the LORD spoke to Moses from a burning bush.

It was not in some favored vacation spot, where a cool breeze and soft pillow are sought after. It was no weekend retreat that promised comfort and plenty to eat. Rather, it was on the far side of the desert that Moses was forever changed.

  • It was out of a pit, and into slavery that Joseph found favor with God.
  • It was in desperate loneliness that Jacob met the Lord.
  • It was the year that King Uzziah died when Isaiah saw the Lord.
  • Abandoned on Patmos, John wrote Revelation.

It was from a Haitian jail that God showed me things about his Glory I had never seen. In great physical discomfort I found comfort. In what felt like hopelessness I found hope.

Many things crossed my mind during those God breathed days. Two things I thought would never happen; one, I thought I would never see Alex, Junior and Florence again, and second, I thought I would never be able to engage in orphan ministry in Haiti again. Two years ago,  the Lord allowed Renee and I to attend Alex’s wedding and next week Steve McMullin and I return to Port-au-Prince to consider a life long partnership with New Horizon Home.

Followers of the Lord don’t get to set the stage and arrange the scenery and then work up an experience.  The Spirit does not work that way.  It may well be in the unlikeliest place or on the darkest day, thought to have been abandoned by God that God may likely summon you to the far side of the desert.

Eastside Baptist Church, in Twin Falls, Idaho will courageously be sending Steve and me to investigate what the Lord wants from us now. New Horizon Home is an orphanage home for 20 children who have been orphaned, abandoned, or rescued from a life of slavery. Our assignment is to consider the work and bring a report back to the Lord’s people at Eastside to act on what we hear from the Lord. I will have a prayer guide for praying saints ready by the end of the week. Contact me for information on the prayer guide. The Lord invited Jeremiah to ‘Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ (Jeremiah 33:3)

It is our intent to consult with God on this matter. Pray that we listen and obey.

When is the last time you considered the doctrine (teaching) of the fall of man? Here is the audio recording of last night’s doctrinal study on the Doctrine of the Fall of Man. Below is also the print version of the 1925 New Hampshire Confession and the 1689 London Baptist Confession on the doctrine.

III. The Fall of Man

Man was created by the special act of God, as recorded in Genesis. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” (Gen. 1:27). “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Gen. 2:7).

He was created in a state of holiness under the law of his Maker, but, through the temptation of Satan, he transgressed the command of God and fell from his original holiness and righteousness; whereby his posterity inherit a nature corrupt and in bondage to sin, are under condemnation, and as soon as they are capable of moral action, become actual transgressors.

The Fall of Man, Sin and Punishment

  1. Although God created man upright and perfect, and gave him a righteous law, which secured life for him while he kept it, and although God warned him that he would die if he broke it, yet man did not live long in this honour.- Satan using the subtlety of the serpent to subdue Eve, seduced Adam by her, and he, without any compulsion, wilfully transgressed the law of their creation and the command given to them by eating the forbidden fruit.- And this act God, according to His wise and holy counsel, was pleased to permit, having purposed to order it to His own glory.
  2. Our first parents, by this sin, fell from their original righteousness and communion with God, and we in them. For from this, death came upon all: all becoming dead in sin and wholly defiled in all the faculties and parts of soul and body.
  3. They being the root, and by God’s appointment, standing in the room and stead of all mankind, the guilt of this sin was imputed, and their corrupted nature conveyed, to all their posterity descending from them by ordinary generation. Their descendants are therefore conceived in sin, and are by nature the children of wrath, the servants of sin, and the subjects of death and all other miseries, spiritual, temporal, and eternal, unless the Lord Jesus sets them free.
  4. All actual transgressions proceed from this original corruption, by which we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil.
  5. During this life the corruption of nature remains in those who are regenerated, and although it is pardoned and mortified through Christ, yet this corrupt nature and all its motions are truly and properly sinful.

I just finished re-reading my journal entries from January 14 – February 17 of 2010. To read those entries from the vantage point of three years later has me with much gratitude that I recorded my thoughts during those days. There was no way on January 16, 2010 to know what the unfolding days would disclose as the Lord directed each step.

My recorded prayer on January 16, 2010 was short but exposed my sinful attraction to comfort. Not that comfort is a sin, but rather an ungrateful heart for any blessing of comfort.

On January 17, 2010 I called the faithful of Eastside to be prepared as we wait to hear from the Lord on what we should do.  I asked them  to pray together as one about what our response should be to the need in Haiti. We prayed, several responded to the need to apply for a passport. Many committed to pray.

First thing in the morning on January 18, 2010 I received an invitation to consider helping a sister church respond. They were looking for people ready to go help prepare a structure to begin receiving orphans. Before the day was up, four men committed to go with me. Four men I hold with humble respect; Silas Thompson, Steve McMullin, Drew Culberth, and Jim Allen. (it would be a few more days before we would meet the women and I hold them with the same level of humble respect as the men.)

We began to make plans to go into an unknown situation… found it a difficult situation … and learned to walk with joy in the Lord.

I tell you this truth… “The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” (Prov 16:9 NASB)

 

Anniversary Announcement

I would like to announce the wedding anniversary of me to Teresa Renee. The anniversary will take place on December 20, 2012. It will be the 26th year of remembrance of a grand and glorious day.

This is the actual picture used in our hometown newspapers of Clovis, New Mexico and Trinidad, Colorado.

This photo was taken with cutting edge photography in 1985. It was taken with actual 35mm film that was developed in a photo lab somewhere in New Mexico.

Here are a couple of random observations of this 46 year old man looking at that 20 year old goober standing next to that beautiful 19 year old.

Let’s address the obvious then move on from there. First: “how does a goof (that’s an 80’s term of endearment)  like that get a babe (that’s 80’s lingo) like that?” (***disclaimer #1*** I’ve never referred to Renee as a “babe” in fear of being beaten to a pulp. ***disclaimer #2*** Renee has never beaten me to a pulp. ***disclaimer #3*** she could if she wanted to, I think. *** disclaimer #4*** I’ve always thought a night on the couch as extremely uncomfortable. ***disclaimer #5*** We have since bought a more comfortable couch. ***disclaimer #6*** someone should stop me now, we still don’t own a blanket that keeps me warm out here. I should have retrieved a pillow before I wrote this.)

Now on to a few more observations.

  • I don’t remember having two eyebrows.
  • I should have considered looking in the mirror to comb my hair.
  • That is a very narrow tie.
  • I can’t wear that size of shirt anymore.

But look who I’m still standing next to as we announce our upcoming wedding anniversary.
