For Church and Family (002) Teach Children to Anticipate the Lord’s Day

In today’s post I encourage parents to teach their children to treat the Lord’s Day as an anticipated event when we gather at the church house, and when we go to the church house it is different than when we go to the park.

Tips for Church and Family:

  • Parents:
    • Take time this week to train your children what rowdy behavior is and when and where it is appropriate to behave like that.
      • You could even make a game out of it with pictures of places that it is appropriate to use a loud voice or when it is appropriate to use a quiet voice.
      • Ask your children how they think they should behave in different places and why.
      • Be sure to speak about the difference between being quiet at the movie house and quiet at the church house may be similar for behavior at the church house is different, and why its different.
      • Be sure to explain why it’s o.k. to be loud and rowdy at some places and not others. They need to know why.
      • Talk about God everyday. Not as someone we go visit on the Lord’s Day, but the one we gather with others to worship at the same place, on the same day, at the same time.
    • Build an expectation for the Lord’s Day. Make a big deal about it. Talk about it all week long. All of us plan our lives around what we anticipate.
  • Church:
    • Be sure to speak to the children at the church house on the Lord’s Day. This will increase the desire in them to want to come.
    • Be sure to model for the children in our church what adults look like who anticipate gathering on the Lord’s Day.
